Don't fly EasyJet!

Not quite as bad as the headline makes it.

From the link
But from 2nd July, these dimensions will be slimmed down to 50cm by 40 cm by 20cm (including wheels, pockets and handles).

You may still be able to take bags that meet the old limit onboard as hand luggage.

However it's not guaranteed, and it may be checked into the hold if the flight is busy and there is little space.

While this will not incur a charge, it does mean that you will have to queue to retrieve your bag from the baggage carousel on arrival.

We just flew Ryan air and got 10kg hand luggage each
Pretty damn good

We regularly fly to Mallorca. Rather than suffer these fools by flying from Bristol, we drive across the country to fly BA fom London City. A much nicer experience all round and often only pennies more.

Costs a bit more but SleazyJet Speedy Boarding guarantees their current cabin baggage allowance will travel in the cabin.

Emirates offer you 6kg handluggage. Quite a lot I believe.

You've obviously never flown regularly with camera gear as hand luggage :D 6kg nothing when you packing bodies, lenses including the big Ls and also the weight of the bag, 6kg doesn't even cover it. that's why I flew BA to South Africa. As for a storm cases and putting my gear in the hold, not sure i trust the baggage handlers to handle with care....... :gag::suspect:

I put them in pelicases in the hold. Even if they throw the case they are crush proof etc and padded so should be fine
I say I do; I will be in September.

Whenever I fly I wear a coat with loads of pockets in it and ram them full of stuff to keep the weight of my hand luggage down. Whats to stop someone wearing a photographers vest and putting as much gear as possible in the pockets.

You may carry strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (no allowance for infants) subject to certain weight and dimensions restrictions (click here for Regulations concerning Cabin Baggage). If you have a handbag, briefcase, laptop, airport shop purchases, camera etc. these must be carried in your single permitted item of cabin baggage.

Try Aer Arann
One piece of carry-on baggage may not exceed limit of 7kgs / 15lbs
Carry-on baggage must be within the size dimensions of 48cm H (18.5") x 33cm W (13") x 20cm D (8")

Though they do actually permit a camera bag / laptop case as well . I use a Lowepro Event messenger 150 - so the iPad goes in there and so do the contents of my handbag [ just ;) ].

Easyjet is cheap though. My son flew back from Germany last week for £50. Whilst looking for flights I found Luthansa's 'economy' fare for the same trip at 860 Euros!

We flew Easyet from Bristol to Inverness and back last week (a route I use regularly on my own). Checked with staff and as we paid full price for my 2.5 year old son's seat, he has exactly the same carry on luggage allowance as my wife and I.

I'm not suggesting that taking a toddler in a flight will help you in any way, in fact quite th opposite, but it does make a bit of a mockery of that statement posted on their own website.

Not really as a toddler is not an infant.

Infants are carried on the parents lap and are not charged for so therefore they do not have a luggage allowance. Quite fair IMO.

Heard about this the other day, not good at all, needless to say I won't be flying with them or any airline that follows suit.

I think we'd all rather pay extra to have our bags in the overheads with us rather than in the hold wouldn't we? I can't remember if that's an option though with easy jet, pay for extra weight?

Yep in the past have worn photographers vest to more gear on with me :)

That's my plan when I leave the country shortly :) As I'll be way over the limit in lenses and bodies.. And there's no way I'm letting them go in checked luggage..

Best start practising walking!

I noticed that Thompson had dropped their weight limit for cabin baggage to 5kg (from 7 last year) but luckily they didn't weigh it either way this year (they did last year...) In the past, I've put lenses in fleece pockets for the weigh in but this year I was travelling (photographically) light so would have had to try to fit the portable DVD player into a pocket! Since we both watched films on our iPods both ways, the DVD player can stay behind next time.

Some people we know flew to the same place with RyanAir at a much cheaper fare but once things like check in charges and baggage allowances were factored in, their saving wasn't so much (and the faffing they went through to achieve on line check in wasted a day of their holiday). Our flights were both on time too - theirs were both delayed.

Perfectly fair comment Heather, I hadn't really considered the differentiaton of a toddler and an infant, but it's obvious now you've pointed it out.

Still, I went and read the Easyjet website earlier. The new, slightly smaller baggage size is what they guarantee you will be able to carry on. You can still take the old size, but if its a busy flight, and you're not an Easyjet Plus Speedy Boarder (which I read as having to be a Plus card holder which is a paid for subscription service for frequent flyers to get better deals, not just a Speedy Boarder) you run the risk of them taking it from you to go in the hold luggage. However, that would be done at the plane/gate, not at check in, so at least your bag wouldn't have to go through the trauma of the entire airport system.

I use Easyjet all the time, working in Germany and living in England. I have to say, for a budget airline they are pretty decent and I have never had a problem with them (airport staff once left my boxed bike by the carousel and anyone could have taken it. It was quite expensive and I wasn't beat pleased, but it's not really different to any other bag on the carousel).

Anyway the point is I see people frequently taking bags that are frankly far too big for hand luggage. I know these companies bought it on themselves by charging for cabin baggage, but some people really take the ****. And then they have the audacity to get shorty with the staff.

Frankly, I think it's a good idea. And like it says, you still won't ha e to pay - you just might have to wait to retrieve it. It's really not the end of the world.

I once saw one guy take on a huge Bergen, a suit and a laptop bag. And then got upset he couldn't take it all on with him. Like someone has said, there are plenty of other airlines available. I'd rather use easyJet over Ryanair any day of the week.

All people need to do with cabin baggage is be a bit sensible and getting in the queue early is the key. I've done hundreds of flights all over the place carrying either a medium or large Lowepro camera bag and an electric guitar in a soft case as hand luggage, if you get on early and make sure you get them in while there's space it's not usually a problem. The only time I've ever really had problems fitting things in the overhead bins is when I've been on a plane that's so small they genuinely won't fit (like a Dash 8-100) or flying domestic in Japan where the overhead bins on ANA's domestic configured 777's aren't long enough to fit a guitar in. On the small ones they just sit it in the hold on top of all the other luggage which is absolutely fine, on the big ones there's usually a spare seat things like guitars can use or a cupboard in a galley somewhere (or business class on standard config planes).

Another thing people can do is try figure out how to make things fit with other passengers, if you see someone trying to fit something in the overhead bin and your bag is in the way but there's still plenty of space then have the courtesy to get off your arse and move it. People seem to get almost territorial about space in the overhead bins sometimes but if people had a bit more sense and worked together on making the best of what space there is it would be a lot easier. easyJet only operate A320 series aircraft these days and the bins in them are actually huge, with a bit of sense there really shouldn't be any problems fitting things in on the vast majority of flights.

So yeah, I don't have a problem with people carrying large items in the cabin as long as they're prepared to wait a bit longer in the queue and get in there early (admittedly having frequent flyer status with airlines/alliances and having priority boarding can be a big help here but anyone can still get in a queue early). It's the ones that turn up last minute and whinge at there not been any space that annoy me!

Peli cases are great, things just get messed up slightly when you arrive at your destination airport and they don't!

I don't know how familiar you are with flying and having luggage go missing but it's probably worth carrying one body and the lens that's most useful to you in the cabin. Lost luggage can sometimes take a day or two to get to your destination airport depending on where in the world you are, the airline/handling agent will then usually arrange a courier to drop them off at your hotel but if you're out in the middle of nowhere you're unlikely to be reunited with your gear before you need it so carrying at least something you can shoot with in the cabin with you does make sense. When we fly with guitars in the hold we always arrange to have backups at the gig to use just in case ours go missing which has actually happened rather a lot of times!

The bhakhsheesh levels are higher for getting camera gear back from holds too, in some countries.

On my last flight in April (with Jet2) there was some problem with the bridge to the plane, so I was able to watch the baggage taken off the plane before I was. I saw my bag leave the plane before me. But I saw how the handlers were handling things, and it wasn't that gently I can tell you. :shake: Not excessively rough, but things were flung, as they would have to be to get things off in a reasonable amount of time. When travelling I have all my camera gear plus laptop in my backpack, and I wouldn't trust the gear to survive the trip in and out of the plane hold no matter how close the the gate is to the plane. :nono:

I would rather they sorted all these things out at check in because at the gate there is more pressure to accept whatever they say, and you haven't been waiting for an hour plus just to be stopped at the last hurdle.

Yes, you may get away with it, but you may not. And then the staff may enforce the rules one way here, but differently at your destination. The uncertainty is the problem for me. I have a bag that was within their rules, but now isn't. My bag cost a lot, and is big enough for everything I want to take, gear wise. And now it isn't, what do I do, buy a new bag? But it won't be big enough for all my stuff.

And some are saying, well don't fly with them. This is fine when you live near London, Birmingham, Glasgow, very larg airports etc, because there may be other options, but your options are greatly reduced the further you are from a large airport. I was considering going to Lisbon, luckily Easyjet fly there from Liverpool, but Ryanair don't, and they don't fly there from Manchester either. And Easyjet and Jet2 don't fly there from Manchester either. BA don't fly from Liverpool, so it's Manchester, and it's from Manchester to Heathrow, then to Lisbon, and the outgoing flight is almost the cost of the whole flight from Liverpool. But this bag problem is putting me right off. :(

"bhakhsheesh"?  Had to have a look for what that meant. "Tipping, charitable giving, and certain forms of political corruption and bribery in the Middle East and South Asia" apparently, according to Wikipedia.

Yeah, if you go to certain places with expensive-looking camera gear in the hold, then you may find there are "import problems". These are usually rectified with a "donation to the local customs officers benevolent fund".

Although the last place I got stung is in the EU.

Easyjet are good.

This changes nothing other than that if you have a really small bag, then they're guaranteeing that you won't have to check it at all. If you're at the very back end of the queue, and everyone else has taken masses of carryon, then the plane bins might be full and you may have to check it free. This happens on every airline in the world...

And, buy extra legroom and you get guaranteed large allowance. OKAY :D

All on top of unlimited weight in carryon... Easyjet are pretty good really

Good compared to?

Well Ryan Air might be a good example.
I have to say I flew to Dublin last week and to avoid Ryan Air I went Aer Lingus.
It may have helped that it was very quiet because it was early and a Sunday in a bank holiday but it was a very pleasant experience.

Have never had the misfortune of travelling with them (Ryan Air, Aer Lingua) so can't comment, but I imagine most budget airlines all being much of a muchness?

One thing that really irked me with Easyjet is that you have to queue for you seats like animals in a pen. I'd rather roll up whenever and know my seat is on aisle x and I'm guaranteed to be sitting with my party.

OIr the person who'se just shoving your stuff around to make their enormous bag fit, or they only want to use the bin above them, not another thats empty.

I've found BA to be comparable with prices quite often and terminal 5 is great.

Surely this is good news?

When I fly I don't tell clients they need to book airline x or y, I just tell them what my requirements for luggage are. Previously the two that fulfilled them were Easyjet and BA business.

Hello more BA miles......

It's irritating when they don't all have the same allowances. There should be standard sizes. Funny how very few allowances get larger. ;) :bonk:

British Airways (economy) - 56 x 45 x 25cm hand luggage plus separate Laptop or handbag up to 45 x 36 x 20cm. Less than 23kg. Hold luggage 23kg.
Easyjet - 50 x 40 x 20cm hand luggage. No weight limit stated. Hold luggage 20kg.
Jet2 - 56 x 45 x 25cm hand luggage. Less than 10kg. Hold luggage 22kg.
Monarch - 56 x 40 x 25cm hand luggage. Less than 10kg. Hand luggage not guaranteed like Easyjet. Hold luggage 20kg.
Ryanair - 55 x 40 x 20cm hand luggage. Less than 10kg. Hold luggage 15kg.

You can pay more to guarantee that your hand luggage stays actual hand luggage. And for most if not all you can pay for heavier hold luggage.

Obviously these are subject to change as the Easyjet changes show, and it's worth checking even, or especially, if you have flown before with an operator. :suspect:
