So what we really need is more photographers on the beach so the seals / pups get used to us so we can go in for the wide-angle macro shots

I think this thread has now run its course.
It's been an interesting, enlightening, frustrating, sad and encouraging debate, all rolled into one.
I think, through it's ups and downs, we have all gained something positive and it has made us stop and think a little about the effect we, as photographers, have on the subjects we are photographing. For that alone it has been worthwhile.
Now ladies and gentlemen, mind the doors.
