Hello

I started a thread the other day regarding setting up a wireless network and was told I needed a dongle.. Ok I got a dongle plugged it in and the drivers were found straight away and it found my wireless network too.. BUT when I typed in the network WEP key it refused to connect telling me I had entered the incorrect key?? I know it was the correct key because I checked it a million times! Any way it then told me that the settings were incorrect so I tried changing a few settings and voilà None of it works now...lol it won't even detect the network and as far as the computer is concerned there is no dongle connected and there are no problems either...

Does anyone know anything about these bloody things?? Any help to get this thing working again would be greatly appreciated..:'(

How do you know the WEP key is correct, where are you getting it from?

Also, you need to reverse the settings to changed if its no longer detecting the wireless network

do not use wep if you can help it , It takes less than 5min to bash the encryption key

If it's Windows 7, click the wireless icon in the taskbar (bottom right), right click your wireless network name, then click properties. Check the settings are correct in there.

If it's not recognising it, go to the device manager and check if there's a exclamation mark or something beside it (probabaly under Network Adapters I think). This should tell you if there if there's a problem with the driver.

CAP lock could well be the problem here matey..

Try it i had the same problem earlier in the year...

Start by turning off the security for a few minutes and see if you get a connection.

If you do turn it back on again and make sure that your router and wireless dongles etc are using EXACTLY the same security!

I would suggest using WPA PSK if it is an option but make sure that it is the same or it isn't going to work.

Right I tried to change the settings as mentioned earlier but it doesn't even show a connection or network for me to change..

I know it was not a caps lock thing because i could see the password as I typed it in..

I;m going to try the new option posted now...

OK...update:

Got the dongle working again..driver issue!

But it still will not let me connect to the network??

The dongle is an 11n but the network shows up as g?? could this be the problem??

Also the main network is setup as a wpa psk encrypted network but the pc im trying to setup does not give me the psk option?? just wpa personal or enterprise??

Try personal

Try switching security off and logging onto your router....something like 192.168.0.1 and check that you laptop is permitted access.

id put money on this being a straight forward driver and/or connection setup on the PC end issue to be honest.

You are no doubt correct as I ain't got a scooby when it comes to software!

I know it isn't the main pc which is hard wired to the router or the router it's self as I connect to the network all the time with my mobile phone and laptop! The problem is at the editing pc end and the new dongle..

The thing that is really confusing me is that when I manually connect to the wireless network and enter all the "correct" info it tells me the settings do not match the network??

When I change the encryption to WEP and sharing which should be wrong it connects but I only get limited access and can't actually connect to the internet???

I am about ready to throw this bloody thing at the wall... I just don't get it..:cuckoo::razz::'(

What dongle is it?

Link..

Although after actually looking on the link myself at the bottom Q and A It says not guaranteed to work with win 7...! the blokey in the store assured me they are all compatible!!!!

ooohhhh why I ought a...!!!! some words will be exchanged tomorrow..

Hmm, most new dongles should work with windows 7 I would have thought. Usually things that work on vista, work on windows 7 though (same drivers will work). However I must say I've had problems with 2 usb wifi dongles in the last year that 'supposedly' work with vista or windows 7 and do not without hacked drivers I found on the internet (even then still had occasional problems).

Best make sure you buy one that states it works/is compatable with windows 7. I'd also stick to a well known brand name as there is usually more support and things written about them (in case there is a problem). There is virtually nothing about that dongle on google apart from maplin's own site. Usally means some generic copy of something made in a large factory in china or something sold under different obscure names, with little info about them.

right so once the dongle is installed youre just clicking on the network icon down by the clock and hitting connect on your network and entering your password? im still trying to figure out why youre specifying WEP/WPA etc.

id be inclined to go into "network and sharing center", go to "manage wireless networks", delete your connection and start again.

WWWOOOOOO HHHOOOOO All sorted now! Took it back and got a better quality one.

the new one did all the work when i put it in and now i have tinterweb working a treat..

Cheers for all the help guys
