Hi Filks,

A friend of mine is using a dongle to access the internet and it seems to be using a s***load of data and she can't work out why. As far she knows she's only using it to do the normal surfing, facespace, emailing stuff that she always has but she's rattled through 3 gb in a week and it used to last her a month.

She's on a laptop PC, is there a way she can see what's using so much data? I use a Mac so the world of the PC is a mystery to me.

TIA

Is it a MiFi dongle or a USB plug in dongle?

Either way make sure access to it is password protected

OK, I'm pretty sure it is but I'll ask. It's a MiFi dongle.
It's downloading Windows 10 in the background ready for an upgrade.
Is the Windows 10 thing automatic?

If it is MiFi then make sure she has password protected access to it and that only she has the password.

If it is not protected then anyone within range can jump on and use it

Is that easy to check?

Is it the same as home wifi? Will it be the WPA?

She should be able to log into the MiFi dashboard and make the changes there.

Yup same as doing the home WiFi

Stop Windows update, and the AV updates, whilst using the dongle.

Yes, it preloads the installation files on W7 and W8 systems, and it's about 3-4Gb.

Thanks folks, just going to call her now and see if that's happening.

Much appreciated

yup if you are on mobile data you need to turn off windows updates.

I am like that up in scotland also.

I tend to take my laptop home once a month ish and do all the updates then.

Beware that Microsoft really want the Windows 10 downloads to continue, so have made it hard to cancel them.
