What are peoples thoughts on this initiative. I know many here claim that photographs should never be given away for free and doing so undervalues the profession.

This website offers copyright free images only for educational use. Does tht make a difference?

I was a teacher and access to content that you could use was very limited, funding just isn't there for the purchase of good quality content, having access to content I could use to enrich my students learning like this would have been fantastic when I was teaching. I am thinking of contributing to it myself.

I guess spelling it out to educators via a dedicated site makes some sense, but a flickr search for images with a suitable Creative Commons license would, at first glance, provide better results.

but the creative commons licenses are all differnet depending on how the user has decided you should accredit their content. you have to do an amount of due dilligence yourself. a lot of teachers aren't in a position to do that.

its not the actual cc licenses that are the issue, it's that none of them are so defined that once learning them you can know which ones to look out for. The license itself requires the author to dictate who attribution should be applied.

This is too much work for the average teacher to check against each image and follow it's rules accordingly
