Don McCullin Exhibition

Well took a drive out to see this with Barrie (@Bazzle ) - interesting journey and discovered that pheasant meeting car @ 70mph isn't particularly good for either ...

I thought the exhibition was rather good, this is not an exhibition of pretty pictures, though there are some. It is displayed in chronological order, but with two entrances to the gallery it is easy to start in the middle! I didn't feel it detracted in anyway though. The gallery space is excellent with good light so it shows the images to their full potential. There are other art exhibitions to see, though some left me rather cold as I really didn't get or understand them. They also make a rather good coffee there too.

Some of the images are very powerful imo. Some are extremely harrowing too so be warned. Thoroughly enjoyed it though, one nice touch is there are a couple of displays in the centre with articles from magazines featuring DMs work as well as his old and battered Nikon F. He will be there on the 15th December (I think) in discussion for those that are interested, sadly I won't be able to make it, however I'd certainly go and see the exhibition again.

****ing miles away from me :(

Spotted last night that the Don McCullin exhibition, Conflict, People, Landscapa is currently on display in Somerset

http://www.hauserwirth.com/exhibitions/2603/don-mccullin-conflict-y-people-y-landscape/view/

Might be interesting for those in the South West

Thanks for highlighting this - Mccullin is one of my favorite photographers and this is only about 45 mins up the A303 for me

Quaypurlake , which is on at the gallery at the same time , also looks like it might be worth a look

I went to see this exhibition yesterday. What a great discovery of this gallery, really good display areas, bistro area with a salt room dry curing meat, bar with great coffee and a good couple of shop areas with some interesting books.

The Don McCullin exhibition was good, I'd seen the majority before but I went to see his landscapes, however thee was a total of around 60 images and two large display cases with original magazines, plus of course his camera that took the hit. Very good reference guides available in each room.

Quaypurlake was also interesting with images and art referencing the Somerset landscape. Some other interesting art in the other rooms and outside in the courtyard.

Sunday 31st man at 5pm, Don is in conversation there with Mariella frostrup, plus there's other interesting things coming up.

So it's about an hour twenty away from me, but a place I'll visit again.

..., bar with great coffee....
Told you the coffee was good :)

The meat curing area ought to be an exhibition (it isn't, even states this on the glass) ... apparently the main glass panels weigh several tonnes! I agree, it is a nice gallery even if I didn't "get" some of the art there.
