We had one of our energy saver Halogen bulbs blow and realised we had only one off rated @42W left.......................bit too glow worm like for the room it is needed for, where the old one was rated 70W (=100W equivalent brightness).

I have found that the supermarket(s) and others like Dyas only sell LED lamps but as we have dimmers on various light switches LED replacements are not just "swap outs" as LED's require AFAIK a very specific type of dimmer.

So in the first instance does anyone know where to still but the Halogen Energy Savers other than the odd online only supplier???

Also, if you have replaced your dimmer switches in usage or anticipation of the changeover to LED what make & model did you buy??

TIA :)

Your best bet is to go in to a dedicated electrical wholesaler (mainly for trade but they help anyone)

I bought a decent stock of the main bulbs I want to dim from https://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Lighting_Menu_Index/Lamps_and_Tubes_Index/index.html

Some LED bulbs will dim ok, but in my experience its very hit and miss. I have a number of RF Lightwave Dimmer switches and these don't like dimming LEDs unless there are a lot of them on the circuit, which keeps the current draw up.

Thanks both for the thoughts and insights...........................I will check them out :)

Edit ~ I have identified that CEF have some in stock and have ordered a couple of the Wattages that we use for collection at our local store. FWIW tlc-direct have sold out and have no indication that replenishment is due (or likely).

Thanks again for the pointers :) Though will have to plan on updating our dimmer switches

Talk it through with them.
Most places are happy to help, though I've come across a few trade outlets that treat non trade as idiots :)

Just back from Screwfix with LED bulbs for a new light fitting :)

Just to update this thread.

As mentioned CEF had the Halogen energy saver bulbs we needed and as suggested I asked about Dimmers for LED lamps.

The sales guy was very helpful and suggested a suitable make & model................long story short I have ordered the dimmers, dimmable LED 12W bulbs and some new polished brass knobs to go with the brass switch plates :)

We will put the Halogens into store for the other non dimmed rooms and side lamps to use as needed.

Not a cheap outlay but does sort of future proof the fittings........though the dimmers are not suitable for both LED and incandescent lamps

Oh, the Dimmers are Varilight vPro MJP120 model. Online reviews are very positive for what I have learned is UK manufactured product :)

PS buying 4 off he gave me what would normally be the trade discount for that quantity :D
