Quick question,

Lets presume I owned www.photography.TV - and I setup an online store selling tog equipment etc. Secure Server, pro design, good shopping cart etc etc...

Based on the initial impression being good, and the domain name ending .TV - and ignoring all other factors, would you initially trust or mistrust this site & domain?

I am not setting up any tog related site, completly different area, but curious none the less :)

Gary...

Maybe I'm a bit cynical, but I know how easy it is to run a scam on the internet. Personally if I had never heard of the site, I wouldn't be too willing to part with any money.

Id let other people try it out first and wait for their recommendation.

Sorry Garry

.tv isn't that mean to be for tv programs only?

i would be a bit suspicous

I wouldnt buy anything from a site just because it looked good and had a 'good' url - I only ever really buy online from places that people I know have recommended. Sometimes I will take a chance on a random site...but that is always after getting some sort of review of its services online.

No worries John, honest opinion is very important. For the record, the site would not be selling anything, more of a "service and advice" style of site...

You would submit your details and get advice for free. I gave a bad example.

Gary.

The question is, is a .TV url good / bad / how does it compare to the same .COM or .CO.UK from a trust level?

.tv is just code like .co.uk for the island of Tuvalu - doesnt have to be a tv related site, but loads of tv shows and companies bought website with that ending obviously because it was fancier than a .com or .co.uk.

didn't know that

Apart from the .tv for TV programs I tend to be more confident in .com or .co.uk . .org is I think aimed at non business operations such as charities.Naturally if the name is available then anyone can use it, but to me it puts a doubt in my mind.

I wouldnt base trust or none trust on a domain name.. Other things would come into bearing first and the name of the domain would probably be bottom of my list.

I buy car insurance from elephant.co.uk as do thousands of others... You wouldnt walk into the "elephant shop" up town for car insurance :)

lol - they do have a massive marketing campaign though, or did at first. That size of campaign creates trust on its own...

Err, no. It's the top level domain for Tuvalu, formerly the British colony of the Ellice Islands, a small (and rapidly sinking) group of islands in the Pacific. The islands having no other significant source of income apart from foreign aid, they have made a business out of selling their domain name. For obvious reasons it has been very popular with companies in the TV industry but not restricted to them.

why would you want tv anyway?

.co.uk makes sense if your customers are uk based
.com makes sense if you want to look more global
.eu is the same but (much) less so

I personally wouldn't touch .tv with your barge-pole

(and there's .biz as well!)

you learn something new everday

.co.uk and .com will not raise any sensors as being spurious before i clicked, but i thing anything else would put me in suspicious mode straight away.

.com is commercial and a good reason to use a none country specific TLD is if the domain name has already been taken.

As an aside.. Many many years ago (8 or 9 or more) I wrote one of the first (certainly the first to update as you watch) multiple domain name check scripts in Perl no less. It litrally has been downloaded millions of times and used all around the world. Got changed to PHP and is still the basis for most domain name check scripts out there... I made it for free...arrgh as a learning process while getting to grips with perl aaargh :(

www.webwho.co.uk

yup - you learn by your mistakes
that's how I know so much!

I don't think trust is ingrained with the domain name chosen, obviously if you use something like .tv then some people may be suspicious but then the same could be said for businesses using .com in the Uk.

Why not have a .net? They are prevalent and can be easier to remember? I would set-up the site and encourage users to offer feedback allowing the site to build from there. Remember though it won't get popular overnight, it takes a long time to become a success :(

Good luck in your venture :)

Thanks, not a new venture already well established - just looking at a new angle, and I there is a cracking .TV domain name which you could not even hope of getting the .COM / .CO.UK / .NET version etc...I already bought it, just going to sit on it for a while I think.

eh? .com is NOT country specific. Its for COMmercial purposes and a worldwide TLD

Historically it's always been a US TLD though with .co.uk being a Uk TLD. I know the 'official' allocation but this is about customer perception.

.com is commercial but the yanks have sort of adopted it as their own. .us isn't that popular.

photography.tv would make a great place for online videos and tutorials.

It's been taken by a reseller.

On any website I've not used before, I like to check out the whois details and the contact us details. I would trust a website (whatever the name) more if there is a UK address (not a PO Box) and telephone number (again not an 0870 number) and to start with taking payments via a secure service (e.g. paypal) which would give some back up if things went belly up.
