Hi Everybody,

I'm just starting to think about website design for a business venture.

Can anyone recommend a good and reliable domain name and web site hosting provider please?

Thanks

Osmo

I'd recommend against asking for domain name suggestions on the internet... you might get squatted.

Also, you'll get more responses if this was posted in the correct forum.

Hosting depends entirely on the kind of website you're expecting to build and what technologies you expect it to use. It's worth shopping around though, you'll get some good deals.

You obviously know so little about this, I'd suggest you contact a local (to you) web site design company to help you.

Hi KayJay,

You are totally right - I missed the computers, websites forum. I didn't think my post was right for that forum but I have just read the description properly. My mistake.

What do you mean squatted?

I'm not asking for domain name suggestions what I am asking for is reputable places where I can buy a name from and to host the website.

Cheers

awp. I've created quite a few websites in the past but never as a commercial operation and that side of things is completely new to me.

compila - they have proved very reliable. I registered a name/webspace last night at 10pm and by midnight I had everything I needed and had wordpress uploaded ready for the off

Ah sorry, I misunderstood. I've bought domains from easily.co.uk in the past, but people like enom are good. Anyone registered with Nominet is a good bet. 123Reg also.

As for hosting Kualo is where I host all my personal websites, I've used Mosso / Rackspace in the past but don't rate them that much.

KayJay: Excellent, thanks for the suggestions. I'll check them out.

www.tsohost.co.uk

Super company and there is someone at the end of a phone to talk to for help.

There have been loads of threads on this subject, FWIW I've been with Dataflame for 6 or 7 years now, for both business & personal sites and recommend them 100%.

I'd say that it was dependant on what you want your website to achieve. What will be the main functionality of the website (depending on this it may rule out some hosting accounts)? What additional elements do you want to add in to the website? How much traffic do you think your website will receive?

Hosting shouldn't be a part of running a website that is taken lightly. It can cause you no end of hastle if you choose the wrong solution.

If somebody on here suggested abcpixs.net as yous domain name and you replied yeah thats a great idea, some less than honorable person could rush off and register that domain name in their name along with the .co.uk, .com.uk etc. etc. etc. versions as well and then offer to sale them to you at a greatly inflated price = domain name squatting

...I got mine from 123reg.co.uk.
Hosting from somewhere different though.

I don't think he means that. He's after someone to register the domain name with.

I've used easily.co.uk for years for domain registering. Very good

I have always used www.1and1.co.uk for my Domain names, and all my sites are hosted with Dreamhost. I pay about £6 per month for pretty much unlimited space and bandwidth, unlimited databases, and unlimited domains. Also comes with free email and a whole load of software with '1 click installers'

May I suggest you read post 4, second paragraph.

My answer was to the question mention in the above location. I did not post any further suggestion as to where to register a domain name as my suggestion along with plenty of others had already been given.

Yeah, whatever.

telivo and 1and1 both on recommendation, and never a problem in 3-4 years.

economical and flexible too! :)

www.123-reg.co.uk has registered over 2 million domain and I have done some myself and always been happy. They also accept paypal payments so that comes handy and safe.

I recently discovered www.tsohost.co.uk and found them extremely helpful. They once helped me around midnight via email support and were spot on. They are also around £14.99 per year and one account allows you to host 2 websites. Both Darren and Adam are very knowledgeable too. They also have Freephone support unlike most others with a national rate creeping up.

Good luck.
