Domain name and email

Whatever you do, don't let someone else get the domain for you ... register it yourself in your own name. Any registrar will enable you to do that and then you can use your domain with any hosting you choose.

That would be fine but don't use their hosting for anything serious, get the domain there and go to someone like CLOOK for reasonable, reliable and helpful hosting.

A domain name can be purchased from any number of reliable organisations and should cost you no more than a few pounds per year.

You then need to choose a company to host the domain for you (this could be the same company). This should not cost more than a few pounds per year either and will come with an ability to set up a few e-mails using your own domain name. If you want more capability like more e-mails, web space, etc... Then expect to pay more.

There are plenty of cheap or even free services out there, but you get what you pay for.

I host my own domain name through 1and1, very cheap and so far very reliable for basic hosting and five e-mails but prices rise if you want more services. I did not buy the domain from them but they will sell you one.

As the previous person said only thing to make sure is that you own the domain then you can transfer it wherever you want, which is an easy process.

For a time I had web space with Clicpiks and had the domain registered with 1and1, who just point it to Clicpiks. The folks at 1and1 were very helpful on the phone to talk me through the setup.

To be honest I would probably be using it for email & watermarks on pics but will probably look in to a site for club pics early next year.

Yes I'm new to all this digital techno stuff, I just take the pics but people at racing (autograss) keep saying I should get a site and sell some. Personally I don't think my photos are all that good but people keep asking for them and I have had a drink or two out of them lol

I have my domain name with them too (and use a Zenfolio site) and an email address. I can't work out how to set up my email address to send though, it just redirects to another email.

Did you have to pay extra for an email address to send from? I've tried emailing 1and1 and got no reply but maybe I should ring...?

Just to be clear.. and part of me hates doing this... but we are advising someone who knows nothing so best to tell him right.... nobody can buy a domain.. your renting it and you ahve to keep renting it in order to keep it :)

Trying to setup gmail with my own domain thru 123reg but I can't get it to verify :(

Have you followed THIS?

No I haven't actually, strange it does say anything about this when Iam in my google account.

If you own a domain and have access to its DNS settings you can sign up for Google Apps (free if you only want a few user accounts on the domain) and set up email that way.

Very simple, and uses the Gmail system which is the best webmail around. Simple to set up on phones and access from just about anywhere too.

Best of all, it's free! You get plenty of space too.
