Hi all,

i wish to register a domain name, set up hosting for email only (currently) and to forward to gmail (my personal preference).

Does anybody have any recommendations for domain purchasing and hosting?

I bought my domain from GoDaddy and then had the site hosted by http://www.swbroadband.co.uk, low-price and no-contract was a no-brainer for me, had I not already purchased the domain I would've up'd my package to the "Plus" package and got my domain included. I'd recommend them :)

I've used UK2 for years, and while some others have had issues they've always been good for me.

Cheers all. Just registered the domain with namecheap. Probably going to host with tso, but sometime soon.

My advice would be to always keep domain names and hosting accounts totally separate.

That way if ever there is any kind of problem with your host you will always have total control over your domain name and where that points to

Get a quality host and that shouldn't be a problem, unlike the likes of the cheaper host I can count the amount of hours downtime from tso in the last 4 years on 1 hand :)

Also take a look at their blog at their data centre they just built, layers of redundancy and state of the art. Customer service and support is phenomenal too, response has always been less than 1 hr.

On a professional side too work (national retailer) has host and domain from same supplier with no issues in the last 8 years.

It is actually good practice to keep domain name registrations and hosting entirely separate.

Any there are many complications that can occur with hosting besides downtime

I've generally used separate reg & hosting - aaisp for registration (via bb-online), dns hosting & email hosting and tagadab for web hosting - generally been pretty happy with this arrangement.

Its ironic, I thought web-hosting and registration was one of the LEAST complicated parts of IT...

Incorrect webserver configuration causing occasional timeouts, slow access to MySQL as the server is too loaded, hacks, poor customer support to name but a few off the top of my cold-ridden head. I'd echo keeping name and hosting separate - it is easier to drop a poor performing hosting provider if you own the domain name outright and have not bought it as part of the hosting package.

I know your comeback will be "but use a decent hosting package in the first place" but then providers service levels change as time goes on. Just look at BeThere as an example....

but use a decent hosting package in the first place ;)

seriously TSO service has never faltered and i dont expect it to with the amount they just plowed into a new dedicated Data Centre. like i say amount of hours worth of issues on 1 hand and if you were to transfer name servers take up to 48 hours to update. depends how much downtime is acceptable to you i guess.

Also a big fan of separate registrar and hosting. I have had accounts compromised in the past and have had to recover domains in the past. Now we pay a bit more to have a domain registrar that isn't so susceptible to the type of attacks we have suffered and our CDN handles our DNS entries which makes switching over servers near instant.
