Having a bit of difficulty after using lightroom. When I have processed my photo's I seem to have loads of rings around my main subject. See image below :(
Its worse if you tilt the screen (laptop) slightly up

Is there away of "smoothing" this away ?

Many thanks

Nige

Are they actually on the RAW file, or just the JPEG you posted here?

This is usually a problem with editing 8bit files, but your RAW files should be at least 12bit. Do these only appear once exported as a JPEG? BTW, I can barely see the rings here. Moving my head around makes no difference either, as I have an expensive IPS screen that doesn't really change much with viewing angle. I think the problem is being exaggerated by the cheap TN panel in your laptop screen too.

looking at that at work on my cheapo acer display i can only just see what you mean by looking well outside of normal viewing angles (i.e. near on 180 deg).

but it does seem to be what garryknight is suggesting from what i can see. its like a gradiented halo around the top of the aircraft?

Thankyou all for you import, David, I can not see them on the RAW files but they are there when they are exported to Flickr :(

Neil, you correct in saying "its like a gradiented halo around the top of the aircraft?"

Its annoying as it shows up badly (to me) on my MacBook Pro

I can see it when tilting my screen away in my cheapo laptop. I wonder if you put a screen shot of your work panel in LR whether it may help us help you a little more.

Does the problem only show when uploaded to flickr, or is it present in the JPG you have saved on the machine as well?
The problem mab well be created by Flick'rs resizing algorythm?

If it's only on the JPEG, then it's just a result of fine gradations that are often present in 8 bit images. What can make it worse is the fact that you edit at 12 or 14 bit level in Lightroom and all looks well, but then translate that large bit depth image to an 8bit colour depth, and there's just not enough room in the histogram.... banding happens. You can lessen it by giving the JPEG less compression when you export it from Lightroom. However, you have no control over how much compression Flickr will give it.

Yep... this is true. Heavily compressed JPEGs will suffer fine gradation banding before less compressed ones. Hello Stu BTW :)

What else hasn't helped here is the fact that the OP seems to have a poor quality screen in that laptop. While visible here... it's not outrageous. You have to just accept that there's a risk your image will not be displayed in all it's glory once you've handed it over to Flickr :)

Thankyou for your help folks, shall check settings in the morning, tooooo many beers tonight :(
