before i found this site (and a great site it is) i was fairly happy with my pics but now:shrug: i see a bird in a tree take a shot alter wb in the menu alter aperture reset shutter speed change iso to get the shutter speed refocus pick a af point focus on the eye bam wheres the bird gone:shrug::suspect: how do you guys do it
 
patience my friend, but things like WB can be adjusted if you shoot RAW. Alot of the shots on here are done from hides or people have set ups in back gardens etc...
 
Practice, practice and ... practice.

Know your camera inside out.
Learn what works and what doesnt

and did I mention practice?
 
Don't let the learning part impact on the enjoyment of the hobby though - I think some people get too hung up on the technical side and forget to enjoy taking photos :)
 
If it helps, I'd recommend 'taking' the shot without the bird in it - that'll let you see what is and isn't in focus, how the white balance looks and whether the exposure needs adjusting.

Sure, you'll likely need to make minor changes when the bird arrives, but it'll get you into the ballpark so any adjustments would be much faster to make.

thats what i thought blacksheep Ive taken fairly good pics without knowing shutter speed aperture or iso before just focused on manual a bang:shrug::wave:
 
I'm with blacksheep on this. There are times when you do need to consider carefully all the settings you use but mostly it's just shutter & aperture. Don't get bogged down in technicallities, enjoy your shooting.

Here's my $0.02

I don’t ever think about WB as I shoot raw, very occasionally raw + jpeg with WB on auto

I only change ISO if I need to so generally it’s at 100 or 200 only upping it further if circumstances really need it. … .I suppose this comes from film where you had a 200 ISO (ASA/DIN equivalent … I am very old ;) ) film in the camera and that was your next 36 shots whether you wanted it or not. So I can shoot all day at one ISO setting. In otherwords I tend to use the ISO to suit the shoot rather than from image to image and only if I can’t get the shutter/aperture I want do I consider changing the ISO

Birds in trees = manual focus to me …. There is too much clutter to get a good auto focus point

That only leaves the aperture & shutter combo and as these two are inextricably linked just turn that adjustment dial until you get and acceptable setting.

Unless you are a dedicated bird photographer with all that it entails they are usually a very frustrating subject.
They just don't keep still and the smaller the bird the more fidgety they seem to be.
I often cannot my bincs to my eyes in time to see them, nevermind my camera.
 
Shoot landscapes, they never fly away. :D

Tried that:-
The seed type feeds sprout up all over the place and all those birds attract cats.
