After having used a 24-105 for a while Im going to be using solely a 35 on 5d and 85 on 50d for the first time for a wedding. I'm looking forward to the much wider apertures. I'm pretty confident about it but I'll always accept any words of wisdom.

If you have a 50mm too, I don't think it would go unused...

Let us know how it goes. Very interested in how you find it - and the results of course.

Seemed to go well. I took more photos than usual to try to insure focus was bang on with the wide apertures. I'll get a link up when they are edited if anyone is interested

Hi Andy, a few people have asked to here from anyone who's shot a wedding using only primes so this thread should get some interest.

I'd love to see some of the results, keep us posted!

Can't wait to see the shots from the 35mm on the 5D, the bokeh is going to be so deliciously smooth. Or in the words of the guy from the digital rev videos - bokehliciousness!

Would love to see the results. There is this thing about primes, seems to bring out the best in ones' abilities

Ok here goes, please don't post any comments on the images on flickr as I've had to use it to host my images and it would thus be visible to the clients.

Thanks Andy. So many beautiful photographs!

Cheers. That's my first feedback from them as I only just sent the link to the clients and they haven't looked yet. Guest passes on Flickr seem a good idea. Now if only I could get my site to work properly I could install a script to play them directly without having to link.

They look great to me! Using primes for weddings is totally underrated! Now try using manual focus primes only, THAT is scary LOL!

I'm not that brave!

Great experiment, I keep wanting to do more prime shooting but then revert to what I know will get the results. Did you get any shots of the B&G posed etc, I can only spot a couple at the door of the church or did I miss them?

Based on this wedding, is it something you would go with again?

Great shots. Well done. I'm in the process of moving to primes and it's a big jump. I find myself constantly tempted to go back to zooms.

Lovely shots there. You should be very proud of those

Thanks very much. I am very pleased with them but it is exceedingly pleasant knowing I'm not the only one that likes them. I am so glad I went with the primes.

They didn't actually want any posed shots, it was meant to be only reportage with the very rushed addition of group and immediate family as it started raining. I will be using primes full stop as that's now all I have.

Ah that makes sense. As for only having primes, does this mean you don't any longer have a backup if one goes down or do you have a nice bag of them ready to play with..... if so, you are a lucky man! :)

I have a 35,85,100is macro. Oh and a 300 but I don't think that's all that useful. I would like something a bit wider at some point but not sure what. Perhaps a 24, the 14 doesn't seem that amazing. Might have to go with a zoom for that.

Just had a flick through some images on my phone and I think you've done great! Fantastic images :)

Thanks. I just hope the family like them enough to order lots of prints.

Can anyone confirm for me that Flickr is down because I can't get on, it seems broke.

Edit. It seems to be back now

Hi Andy

I have run the slideshow in flickr and it works OK

As for the images, quite a lot seem a tad underexposed especially for faces. It is hard to get a balance so not to blow the white dress but you need to push a little more. Example, some of the internal church shots still have the beautiful stained glass windows in full colour but the subjects are a little dark. I would do the odd shot for the windows but mostly I would expose for the faces as this is what the bride and groom want to see.

Some great images and the prime experiment worked.

Cheers for the advice. Perhaps my screen need calibrating a bit better

Well done there mate, I started using primes exclusively a few months back and haven't regretted it. They are a difficult to work with but the results are fantastic no doubt. I have also found they are great confidence boosters as I have to move in and out to get my shots effectively.

Some very strong images there and so nice to see a prime only wedding. Taking that leap takes balls! At my last wedding I took the 24-70 off and had just a 50mm on full frame and 85 on crop, it was very satisfying. But I'm not that brave with primed all day!

Keep it up!

Cheers. I actually didn't find I missed the zoom at all. Hopefully it wasnt my mind just convincing me that I was right to spend 3 times what I sold my zoom for on 2 primes. Regardless, I'm happy

Im so tempted to do this! I have a 35mm 85mm, 24-70, 100mm macro and 70-200 and it gets heavy in the shootsac. I would love to ditch the 70-200 and 24-70 but I worry that i'd need the length. Plus it does help having the 2nd body to shoot on. I prefer to keep my backup out of use incase that goes wrong as well.

Thank you for sharing

As has been said, some really good images; and your venture with the primes-only has paid off very well

I love shooting primes-only, allows me to think more of my composition and slows me down a bit giving me time to think more of the subject. I also love to see others' work that's being challenged by the equipment.

Thanks all for your comments. If anyone else wants to look, better be quick as I will be expiring the guest pass to see them tomorrow.
