My new lens arrived on Wednesday and today was the first time I have had a chance to use it outside the house

So I pack the camera, lens, monopod and dog into the car and head for the local country park.

20 mins of faffing about I spy my pray, a Blackbird in a tree....... I start shooting until im greeted by "No card in Camera" :bang::bang:

Suddenly lugging 3kg round the Country park for an hour is no longer fun

Oh well there's always tomorrow

I refuse to laugh as I just know it will happen to me one day! :)

Mind you, you could set the camera to "fire without card" and just pretend. ;)

No help to you, but some people keep a spare card in the car, better than nothing if your caught out.
I often wonder why the "proper" cameras don't have a built in memory(like many compacts) these days 8gb would take up no space and cost a few quid, and could be set to always back up the last 8gb worth of shots as well as for emergency use.

I always keep a couple of cards in my bag without fail for situations like these, just incase I forget to put my normal cards in the camera

Lol - I've got a 2Gb CF card and an SD card in my wallet for these emergencies - you can tell that its happened to me before

mind you thats not much help when you go out without the batteries like i did the other day (carefully charged all six up, and left them in as nice line next to the charger :bang: ) fortunately my grip has got a battery tray for AAs and that was in the camera bag - so after a quick tour to the garage for several packs of durracels i was back in business

I never take the card out of the camera in the first place unless I have used it all to replace it with another(very rare) Just plug the camera into the PC and down load that way.

always have another four or so cards in the bag.

I know the feeling, did that with the battery once, when I first got the camera and only had one battery, went out and realised I'd left it in the charger at home :bonk:, now I have a grip on each body I have three batteries and spare memory cards too, as Sandisk ones self distruct

Done it,such a pain,I alway carry some spare in my pack, but this one time I had cleared my bag out for a clean, and forgot to put them back :bang:

I've never been out without my memory card but I did once go on holiday and forget my USB cable. My laptop doesn't have an SD card reader so I had no way to retrieve my photos. Luckily I bought a USB card reader. I felt so dumb. The reason I forgot it was because I used to keep it permanently plugged into my computer and completely forgot it whilst packing. I now keep my USB cable in my camera bag and use my reader to retrieve photos at home.

Thats nothing... last September I was in rural Austria, and for once I had everything... laptop, camera, phone, all the chargers for everything.... card readers.

........But i didn't have the bloody travel plug converter......

........and it was a Friday evening when I arrived.

I had to wait until Monday for the local electrics shop opened... my phone surviving on 1% battery the last night. With most functions switched off. My laptop was long dead.

the other day I carefully loaded a full set of camera equipment into our VW caddy, made sure i had absolutely everything ..... then got into the ford ranger that was parked next to it and drove off - 30 miles later lots of 'interesting' words were said , and i had to take all the site visit shots with my blackberry :bonk:

( I couldnt even call a colleague to bring the kit over because i'd locked the caddy and still had the keys in my pocket :bang: )

You got into the completely wrong car?! That is insanely unfortunate!!

yep - I'm not an international playboy though - this is at work where we have three to play with.

I've also before now put half my gear in one vehicle then driven off with the other half in another one.

I did have to stop at a shop and buy and SD once as I had all 6 of my other SD's at home :bang: I did once have a trip all the way to south wales and the photographer and TPer that was with me turned his camera on to find no card :bang: late on a Sunday and he shot CF's :bonk:

Exactly what I do.... Though it's only a matter of time before I leave my one and only battery at home.

I have spare retired cards in the car.. I figure I rarely go anywhere photogrpahing without the car so am safe...

I don't do this because I am clever and organised.. I do this because I learnt my lesson the hard way :(

I left the house at 7am with the dog yesterday to chase the sunrise, on foot over our local common, (it's huge). Took around 50-60 shots then decided to delete one shot that was under exposed, pressed the wrong selection and deleted the lot :bonk: I won't be deleting any until They're all on the computer in future.

I've got 4 CF cards and 4 spare batteries, always charged, in my bag along with the 2 bodies and all my lenses. So far I've not had the misfortune of forgetting any of my kit. I ran out of SD cards at an airshow once, I took a 16Gb SD card for a 550D and used it all up. Had to get my mate to guard my gear while I went looking for another. I'd took over 3,000 photos in about 6 hours and had an hour to go when I ran out.

Went to get some shots for the owners of a newly opened skating rink a couple of weeks ago.

Was assembling my kit in the boot of the car, turned it on to see "NO CF CARD" :bonk:

At that point I visualised my 8GB card sitting in the card reader on the dinning room table after I'd edited the last lot of skating pictures 2 nights previously.

Luckily I still had 2 4GB (and a 16GB Transcend*) cards in my bag so all was good but for a few seconds there was a little panic!!!

* I've found the Transcend card to not be 100% reliable when shooting in RAW as a lot of images have the error message "Unexpected End of File" when trying to open them in LR.

I have 2 bags, the one that goes with the shorther lenses with pretty much everything in and a backpack for the longer lenses, the backpack has a cloth, lens pen, body cap with a rear cap and older memory cards incase I forget to move the card storeage case from the other bag.

But I only never have a card in the camera when I am copying images to the pc so chances of being without a card in there are slim.

I've also I have to admit inadvertently taken my lens cup with me instead of the actual lens - that occasioned several more interesting words (though looking on the bright side i've never poured hot cofee into the actual lens  )

I did something worse than that. I just bought my new camera and was all excited about going on holiday the next day. I packed the bag, ensured I had the camera, the memory card (and spare!), and put the battery on charge over night. Anyway in the rush to leave the next morning I left the battery and charger at home and only realised when I got to the Eurostar terminal. Gutted I was! Fortunately I remembered my old compact, so not all was lost. But I was still gutted!!

Have also left the battery on the charger and gone out without it to a trip to the museum with friends - fortunately one of them had a spare battery that fitted!

I did this spectacularly last week, took not one but two batteries to an open mic night. Both flat. :shake:

I then topped this off by running out of fuel on the way home. :bang:

At least I'd charged my mobile.
