Dog owners - A warning

Our dog is currently on a short holiday at the Vets.

On Saturday, my Wife purchased from a petfood store, a stuffed shank..bone...type thing. The good news here, is that Tess (our lovely Rottie), absolutely loved her little treat. The bad news, is that after vomiting a scary amount of blood from about 2:00am onwards Sunday morning, and being completely lathargic, she has been diagnosed with Pancreitis. The vet has said that this is the result of eating something with an extremely high fat content. X-rays, a scan, medication, and now what looks to be a 2 night stay in the Vet Hotel is going to cost us the best part of £600. Im hoping that we will be able to get the majority of it back from the insurance, but have an excess :(

We have given her bones purchased directly from the butcher before, and realise that, for storage and sale in a normal petfood shop, they would have to be cooked in some way. So, im wondering what exactly this particular bone had been stuffed with??
 
I think I would be going back to the petfood store to ask!

Yes, she responded well to the meds overnight and has put on 3 of the 4kgs she lost in fluid back on, so should be ok to come home tomorrow.
 
Oh god that's awful.. We assume anything from a pet shop is safe!... Hugs to Tess:hug:
 
Thanks for the heads up. It's not a nice thing for family dog to be in the vets. My youngest boy cried when my three dogs had to visit the vets only for injections lol. Hope she makes a speedy recovery.

I don't visit pet shops much because my nearest one is over an hours drive so I buy the food in bulk and also mix it with a raw diet so it lasts a good while. Look into getting your rottie "Stag bars". They are basically just small bits of deer antlers and dogs love them. I'm a gamekeeper and my dogs have a field day with the left over antlers and the parts the local butchers don't want lol

Just watch their teeth, seems since these became a popular item as dog treats there has been an increase in doggy dental problems.

Glad to hear Tess is on the mend Nick :)

They are not too bad with them and pretty gentle. They sit there licking them more than anything but they are kept an eye on.

Sounds like she's well on the road to recovery and I hope she's back home with you again soon. It must be horrible to be parted from her.

I'd always thought that those bones looked like they were stuffed with suet or something along those lines, which is why I've always kept Stella away from them (she tends towards the chubby side as it is)
My own quick Google confirmed my suspicions on the first couple I clicked on :

Our 2yr old beagle recently cost our insurance company just over £2000. He's now back to normal but has a big scar running down his middle as they had to cut him open.
3 weeks later and he's back to normal.
Still don't really now what happened. Looked like he had swallowed something but on opening him up the mass that was seen on the xray was able to be massaged out so at least they didn't have to pierce his intestine.

Blimey, sounds horrible!
 
Yeah I work in the veterinary industry and it was horrible being a customer rather than a service provider.

Luckily I pretty much have my pick of vets and have some inside knowledge of which vets I prefer so had complete trust that they would do everything they can.

Still horrible at the time but he's ok now

Glad to hear it.

We are just waiting for a call back from the vet this morning, to see how she was last night.

the last we heard was at around 7:00pm last night, and she had started to be able to keep some food down, so sounded positive. Hopefully we will be able to get her home today.

Thanks both. Weve had another call from the vets this afternoon. We can pick her up anytime after 5pm today :) :banana:

There will be medication we have to give to her, but at least she will be home. Havent seen her since Sunday morning. Waaaay too long!

Great news that you will be able to pick Tess up and she is recovering, sounds like she had been very lucky. (£600 - I must change my vet, mine would have an extra 0 on the end I think)

Quite a few dog "treats" are very rich or high in fat, especially those that are made to look like stuffed bones but aren't. I gave my pup marrow bones from the butcher while he was teething, then bought a roasted stuffed one from the petshop - he broke that into long and sharp shards so that was soon removed. I feed a raw diet and have to remove chicken skins and fat from the carcass' for him or he is sick. I happened to mention this in passing whilst at the vet and they have said it might be a precursor to pancreatitis and to keep his diet low in fat.

Thanks Christine. We are normally very strict with her diet, and as mentioned above, we have given her bones directly from the butcher before. The only reason we thought this one would be ok, is that it was an actual bone that we purchased. Obviously, we hadnt figured on it being stuffed with absolute crap! Im going down to see the people at the petfood place at the weekend.
