Oh yes it was about tracking dogs that thread wasn't it? :D

Glad you found something suitable

You could always try strapping it to your Velociraptor?

He's a Beagle duh.

As soon as you said you have a wanderer I knew it was a beagle.
Our Beagle has always been off lead. When we were training recall we would let him start to wonder off say maybe 30-40 feet then we would make a noise (not calling his name maybe a cough or a sneeze) and run the opposite direction. He would then worry about us running off and leaving him so wouldn't travel too far off into the distant. its not 100% though however. He ALWAYS finds us before we start to get too worried.

The other thing is lots of treats. Every time he comes back. Even if he just runs off 20 yards ahead, If he comes back he gets a treat. If he stops to sniff and we keep walking then when he catches us up he also gets a treat.

We've been using treats for a long time now and likewise his recall is very good, it's just when he gets that scent trail that things become a problem . You can go right up to his ear and he still won't respond. Just natural instinct I guess, a bit more going on than a dog that will just trot behind your heels all the time.

And thats exactly what the quote goes on to say. Birds of prey aka raptors are the day shift owls are the night shift.
oh knowledgeable hissy one ,i follow your drift but it's not EXACTLY right so therefore incorrect as i have lots of photos of barn owls hunting by day ,and also short eared owls hunting by day ,in fact i used that to my advantage while doing the s.e.o's they usually hunt in winter up till around 11a.m then commence to hunt again at approx 3 p.m .also little owls are active in daylight though i haven't seen them hunting .

saying that i have yet to see a flying dog fitted with a GPS collar

I've seen them too, usually if food is scarce, and or the night was atrocious weather wise.
So its always an exception that proves the rule.

Not forgetting the Nighthawks that dive for insects at erm, night.
its quite eerie TBH the noise the wind makes when passing through their feathers.
Raprtors will hunt Dawn / dusk and Owls Dusk Dawn, so it doesn't have to be pitch black
or bright sunlight for either to fall into the category.

Anyway don't shoot me I never classified them tis just the way it is. :p

I wasn't arguing with you Jeff,
they usually hunt in winter up till around 11a.m then commence to hunt again at approx 3 p.m .also
3pm is nearly dark in the winter and if they a crap hunt during the night (food is scarcer during the winter) they will continue to hunt in daylight, feed or die
Just the same as I said for raptors, they will hunt in half light too.
Owls eyes designed to work at night ( mainly) because the "rods" greatly out number the "cones"
notwithstanding the fact that their are much larger in proportion to their body, to other birds

Well he wandered off today with my wife and I'm on the other side of the city and I could see him in the app wandering about then making his way back to her . Looks like it is a decent enough system .

Got your wife fitted with one as well?

Could be a plan!
