Since getting a dog we have found ourselves rather limited in our ability to get away for short breaks and probably more so for holidays.

The last few years, holidays have been spent in the south of France in September - apartments / cottages etc.

Now we are thinking of staying in UK (dog isn't keen on the car but will tolerate it) and wonder about options. Anyone know of hotels / guesthouses which accept dogs without huge surcharges? Preferably rural areas where long hikes are possible.

Was there a couple of weeks ago and I think they accommodate pets. Worth a call.
Gorgeous location and nice, reasonable place. Wines overpriced.

There are a large number of dog friendly hotels around. Search for dog friendly or pets in pjaymas and you have a pretty good choice. Travelling with two dogs becomes much more restrictive.

Travelling and staying with a dog is much easier in France, pet passport is easy and works well, but if they don't like the car thats not really an option. Try Adaptil and if you're not using one a crate for car journeys which may well help
 
Where do you live and how far are you willing to drive?

We’re the same since getting a dog but there’s so many lovely places to stay with the dog, it’s great! We like Hill walking in the lakes and tend to go once a year now. You can put ‘pet friendly’ in most filters on websites now. Like booking.com, tripadvisor etc. There’s nice cottages on ownersDirect too.

This year we’re going back to the same lodge we had last year in the lakes. Costs roughly £100 a night but it’s 5* with a nice hot tub to relax in after a good walk! It’s called ‘Lakes Lodges’.

I live in York and will travel anywhere - distance isn't a problem for me, only for the dog.

I'll check out some of the booking sites.
 
Just google “dog friendly holidays uk” there’s plenty of places that don’t mind you taking dogs. We stayed in a lovely cottage near Polperro in Cornwall last summer with our Labrador, the owners were fine with us taking him.
 
We generally found the South West of England to be the best place for Dog friendly accommodation.

We stayed at Belan Bach lodges in Llangadfan with the dog for a few days a few years back. The lodges are showing their age, but it was still a lovely time. The hot tub was nice too. All the walks you could ever want on your doorstep too..

Looking at your posts today I can't help but wonder if you've picked up the wrong meds?
 
We got a dog last year. As said, most of the hotel search sites have a pet friendly option to tick although it’s still worth a call to the hotel to check the fine print, if your dog can sit with you while you eat for example. A lot of hotels will set a table in a separate room for you so your dog is away from other diners. The Lakes is very dog friendly. We also stayed in a nice dog friendly hotel, The Old Hall Hotel, in Buxton, which is slap in the middle of the Peak District. If you do intend to venture near the coast it’s well worth checking beach restrictions before you go, especially in summertime.

We have three cavaliers and is even more restrictive, but often we have persuaded establishments that have a limit of two to make an exception after explaining that they sleep in their travel cages.

As for advertising as "dog friendly" its not so friendly when you are told it is £20 per dog per night ! I have friends in the cottage rental business who do not charge for dogs but would love to charge for young children as in their experience most damage is caused by children.

On a serious note if your not to bothered about self catering ,haven holidays have dog friendly static caravans for hire ,the charge per dog is usually only one or two quid per night .and sites country wide .

That's something I'd not thought about... Our longer holidays are always self catering abroad so no reason not to here...

they also tend to be extremely cheap out of school holiday periods ,i.e a week in our own touring caravan including electric ,mains water, and t.v Ariel hook up in June in Yorkshire is well under a £100. not sure on there static prices but I believe its pro-rata .with haven that will also include free entertainment ,and use of swimming pool.

another major player is park dean holidays ,bit more pricey we usually go to west bay ,Dorset with them the site of Broadchurch and other t.v series ..check out there website for dog friendly
