Dog Food

Now you can see why I didn't recommend any particular food, everyone has their own ideas on what to feed and also what is best for their own dog.

Have a look at skinner's range.
The only food our cocker can eat that appears to agree with her is thier field & trial hypoallergenic range.
I was delivering near their factory the other week where they sell direct to the public, so I called in and they gave me several free sample packs to try her on, they were also very helpfull on what was more suitable for her needs.
 
Our vet mentioned that feeding only wet food can rot their teeth, whereas the dry helps keep them clean? He does love the wet food though! lol

the dried food rubs the teeth but you can can obviously substitute this action with something else.
 
Diet (would you believe it) was on tonight's agenda at dog training.

There's nothing quite like watching 'complete feeders' realise that the green and orange bits aren't peas and carrots and that £12 a bag isn't = to £40 a bag.

There was mention of carcinogens earlier. - It's no secret.

We're talking about ingredients that have long since been removed from human food but are still present in animal feed.

To name a few - Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) Propylene glcol, Ethoxyquin, TBHQ, Propyl Gallate. Check your bag.

Animal feed is catching up but there's a lot of **** out there. Pet food producers know the score but they are only just starting to be governed in the same way our food is.

Thanks everyone, it is a minefield out there.

I'll go with my initial plan of the Autarky (even though it has cereal in it), but do a gradual changeover and test how much the new stuff swells with water. I suppose the only real test is to try him and see how he 'reacts'!
 
I don't have a dog but I believe that Germany and a few other European countries (not sure which) have much stricter regulations on pet food than we do.

www.zooplus.co.uk do a good range of pet food, may be worth having a look. Loads of reviews on there and they don't delete the bad ones :)
 
another vote for CSJ or skinners if feeding dry food and both can be delivered direct to your door for around £15 , Raw is worth looking at if you have the freezer space, 4 out of my 5 are fed raw and we've never looked back the 5th it just doesn't agree with so he is on CSJ

Well, he's home :)

Gonna give him 1-2 weeks to settle in and keep him on his JWBL food he's used to. Then I'll give him a try on the Autarky, failing that the CSJ, failing that I'll keep him on the JWBL.

Yeah, you could say that lol. Day one done without any major traumas. He toileted outside a couple of times and just one accident inside. He whimpered for about 10 minutes last night when he was put in his crate, but settled down.

He did have an accident in his crate and one when I let him out at 7am this morning, but think that was more excitement related than him needing to go.

He's eating fine too, albiet a bit quick, but think he was like that in the rescue center.
 
He's a lovely looking dog - congratulations.

If he's eating fast - you could try putting his food on something like a baking tray so it's spread out thin rather than shallow. It will stop him 'gulping' huge amounts.

Putting a heavy rubber ball in the dog dish also helps as the dog will need to eat around it. Some dogs just lift the ball out but you'd be amazed how many don't figure that out.

If fast eating becomes a concern you can also get a break fast bowl......

A stainless steel one would be my choice but the sticky up bits in the bowl mean they can't get huge mouthfulls as they need to pick around them.
 
We picked up our new addition last night. 16 month old Staffy X girl. She's come with what's left of a bag of Bakers.

I've heard a few people in various places say not to feed them Bakers. What's the deal?

My old dog got to 14 1/2 and she was fed on Bakers or supermarket's own brand for the majority of her life.
 
Carla, apparently all the multi coloured chunks in Bakers if full of additives. I was told by the kennel 'it's like giving a kids smarties'.

To be honest I've never found any of the high street ones that good apart from James wellbeloved and science plan but there fat too expensive . E get its from a local farm shop, they do a mix they feed there dogs and mine love it. No sugars or added crap just the good stuff and it's cheap (compared to science plan ect) 4all I do is add a few drops of fish oil to it. But thats because I have shar peis
