Dog allergies/air purifier

My dad suffers badly from lots of allergies and pets are one. We have dogs but would like him to stay over at Xmas but I fear his breathing will be greatly affected. He can come over for short periods and normally with lots of piriten, not sure if it would work all night though.

So I was wondering if anyone knows if air purifiers would help or anything else like sprays or plug in type things.

Not sure of plug ins or anything like that but there are things YOU can do to help in advance. I appreciate these aren't long term solutions but it may help your visitor in the short term:

- Keep your pet to as few rooms as possible just before and whilst they are there.
- Wash your dog at least once a fortnight
- wash the bedding or soft furnishings the dog has slept on regularly.

Also, do not dust/clean the same day your visitor is due to arrive as this disturbs all the allergens into the air.

Those combined with them taking anti histamine might lessen the impact - all depends on how severe their allergy is.

Hopefully someone might know of a good gadget in which case I'll be watching this thread with interest as I'm allergic to our cat.
 
Does not sound good. I'd be surprised if any gadget had more than a minimal effect. It is not just animal fur that triggers allergic response, but also substances excreted through glands etc.
If the reaction was only sneezing/itchy eyes sort of thing it may be worth the risk, but if breathing is affected that's another matter. Your dad should really seek his GP's advice since he will know how bad a reaction may occur.
 
He can barely dust his own home with having serious breathing problems. I don't think he'll ask a doctor though.
I only have a flat so all the rooms hell be in the dog will have been in. Will vax the carpets a few days before hand and wash all bedding etc.

Thought a purifier might remove allergens in the air making it more pure and easier to breath. Or are they just gimmicks.

I am an asthmatic and im also allergic to animal hair, so it sounds like i might be in a similar position as your dad. Unfortunately for me my girlfriend has 2 playfull jack russels so whenever i go round hers i have to take an allergie tablet.

My personal experience is that i am most confortable when the room temperature is quite cool, if the room is hot and stuffy and im surrouded by dogs i have to leave the room. So you might want to think about turning the heating down slightly or maybe opening a small window. Also if you could keep the dog out of the room he will be sleeping in, it will give him a space to relax in hair free.

I found them air purifiers abit of a waste of money. Ive only got one in my bedroom (which is kept clean anyway) and i didn't notice any change at all, apart from the constant sound of the motor. Saying this though i didn't use it for long so maybe i was just being impatient, you can pick them up quite cheaply now so it might be worth giving them ago yourself. But have it running for a couple of days before he arrives.
