DOF Preview

Oops - sorry! My mistake. The screen on my OM 4 looks grittier to my eye than the D300's, hence my confusion. Probably just because it is bigger.

But the bottom line for me is that on a DSLR, presumably owing to the smaller viewfinder, the DOF preview is harder for me to use.

aha...the answer to this and every other DSLR dillemma is:

Buy a Nikon D3x - or die!

It's a waste of time these days - it's supposed to enable you to check DoF, but as Cheng says, at smaller apertures the viewfinder becomes so dark you can't tell anyway

Just review onscreen instead :)

I'd disagree with that, it depends what aperture you're shooting and the size and quality of your camera's viewfinder. I use the DOF preview button quite often when shooting portraits but very little for landscape work...depends on what you're shooting too!

i thought about this, but having pressed it thought no difference and reading ken's write he mentioned it was a function for back in the days so never use it myself

.... When finally moving to digital I made sure I bought a camera (D70s) with preview, but was disappointed to find that it was barely usable, partly because the viewfinder was so much smaller, and partly because the bright screen of the DSLR doesn't render the effect nearly so strongly - I don't know why.

My new D300 has a larger viewfinder and I can see the focus a bit better, but I still can't see the DOF as well as I could on the 35mm OMs, let alone what you will see on your medium format film cameras.

Its becoming obvious from the replies that a bright scene and bright viewfinder can make use of it easily enough.

I'm using a D70s, which not much use by the sound of it, not that that matters as I'll use the preview screen, but I can imagine the button would be faster on the fly so to speak, hayho.

Lol, won't that cause my flash to pop up though. ;);)

you arent a flasher as well are you...:D

i used my torch to get my camera to focus in a dark place this week...hey keep it clean mate:nuts:
