Are there type of photos that just dont ring your bell?

Try as I might, I just cannot find anything interesting about the following type of photography:

Moon shots.
Fireworks.
Motorsports.

Moon pics always seem to get many many replies/comments on TP.

Motorsports: I hardly ever visit that section.

Fireworks: Well, just boring really and for me something that kids would be more interested in.

sports, as its just a subject im not interested in.
anything ive seen a million times already.

I avoid the bugs and creepy crawlies section - seeing them huge on screen scares me :)

I think it's sad if people just disregard types of photos due to their genre rather than because of what's in the photo or the way it's presented.

I can understand people being more interested in particular areas, but I have yet to find an area of photography that I havent seen some amazing pieces of work in.

I am rapidly going off the type of landscape shot that is widely accepted as being extremely good. Yes, it was the first time I saw it. However, hundreds of similar photos of similar viewpoints has curbed my enthusiasm somewhat. Typical examples? Those pointy rocks on Skye under moody clouds and a low sun. The sea, with rocks in the foreground and a purple/orange/red sky. Buchaille Etive Mor. I could go on. All generally shots that are technically very accomplished, often visually stunning, but are totally lacking in imagination. Show me somewhere new goddamit!

Sports in general. Portraits. Mixed feelings about bug shots: appreciate the skill, but seeing them large exacerbates existing phobia.

There are plenty of "doesn't do anything for me" photos, but there is no specific genre that I blanket hate.

There are exceptional images in every field. There's also a lot of crap in every field too.

If a photograph is great, I can still appreciate it, even if I may not like to shoot in that style/genre.

Sunsets - they are great to see in person, but I can't stand sunset photographs.

Yup, further to my other post there are photos that I don't like as photos.

It's not really the subject as any subject can be interesting but there are cliches which photographers use which just shows that they are lazy when it comes to creativity. A few examples of such cliches are:

- Colour splash photography (it can't die soon enough)
- A model with angel's wings.
- A man without a shirt holding a baby/saxophone
- Overcooked HDR

cant say theres anything that I dislike seeing pictures of, i used to dislike plant shots (this was a deep rooted issue because my dad likes to photograph flowers and on holiday there would be lots of pictures of flowers and no pictures of the holiday) however i think ive mellowed now, which is good.

i guess this thread is going to confirm one thing.... one mans **** is another mans toothpaste.....

It's true though. I remember another photographer getting very upset with me when his photographs of the interior of hotel rooms (and yes I am talking about close ups of curtains and window sils etc) didn't float my boat.

Different strokes for different people.

Motorsport, people and portraits - Can't stand pictures with people in them!!

A course I went on, the instructor said a person improved a photo.

I don't mind any sort of photography.

Really depends. Like I don't really like sports shots, for example football. But if it was beach volleyball with women in bikinis I could probably put up with it. Not fond of motorsport shots either. But if there was a fit woman in a bikini lying on it I could probably put up with that. Now, shots of the moon, they're ok, but if it was a fit woman mooning me I'd probably be ok with that too. So it's very much a grey area for me...

Wedding photos, photos of "my cute daughter/son/nephew" - those are personal things, keep your private life to your self - or worse still someone else's private life.

or

anything where skin tone has been adjusted with the liquify tool to the point of the poor unfortunate subject being reduced to a plastic shop window dummy and this result being praised to the hilt.

Oh and motorsport, naturally I hate motorsport too.

There's a few subjects that do absolutely nothing for me, regardless of how technically good the photo is. These include motor sport, pets, weddings and babies. And then there are the famous photographers that do nothing for me...Cartier Bresson for example.

I love watching motorsport but have very little interest in motorsport photography! I can appreciate a good shot, of a crash for example.

As for people.....there is a lot of dross (which is usually down to market forces i.e. Parents) but a great photographer can capture powerful images of people, an image that evoke emotion. Thats something that you dont get with cars or planes.

Weddings. It's not hate, it's absolute disinterest, even though I generally really like to see women in elegant full length dresses.

The "I'm shooting my friend's wedding for free, help please, will my kit lens be OK?" topics are always worth reading though :naughty: .

Why do you assume "humanity" is missing from shots involving aircraft or race machinery? People designed and built then and used them - there's plenty of humanity in there if you know where to look (for example my latest set posted on here don't contain any things racing on tarmac - go take a look).

Also, the machinery itself can evoke an emotional response - just because you aren't someone who feels like that doesn't mean to say it doesn't happen for others.... for example I saw a stunning shot of a section of Spitfires wheeling into frame from an airshow on here the other day and quite frankly if that doesn't move you, I don't know what does!

I think your view of emotions in photography is pretty limited if you imagine it has to have a crying clown or something in it to be emotional... try being less literal... ;)

Anything taken with those really nasty cameras... what are they called ... oh yeah Nikons

:coat:

Only joking guys, don't kill me.

I enjoy pretty much all types of photography from a viewing perspective. Sports are not my favourite subject but I can still appreciate a good sports photograph.

endless bug/beetle/ant/bee/butterfly perched on twig/flower/leaf etc

and nobody mentioned................................................robins...

My comment was directed at the stereotypical motorsport pan shot, some may be technically great but I just cant get excited about them.

I like your set though, it has interest, each image tells a story.

Check this shot out by Steve McCurry. I don't understand how anyone can say they don't admire "people" photography like that.

Never seen his work before, but he's done some excellent war documentary stuff - I'd love to do some of that but doubt I'll ever get the chance.
