Does it have to be Nikon flash?

If I'm using the flash off camera and triggering it with a wireless transmiter (currently using the Yangnu R603), do I have to use a Nikon, or Nikon compatible flash, ie, can I get a Canon flash that I will never attach to the D90 body?

I've just picked up a new YN560 flash that can be used on my D90, so my 2nd flash wont need to go on the body.

I've also read that I only need one R603 trigger that is Nikon compatible for the body, those attached to the flash can be for Canon or Nikon.

I ask because ebay appears to have more used Canon flashes than anything else and I need to watch the pennies!

You can use any make of flash you want off-camera (as long as the trigger voltage is under 12v), so in theory you could use a Canon flash, but the best old flashes are the Nikon ones -SB24/25/26/28/80 which can be found from £45 or so.

I'll certainly keep an eye out for the models you suggest, but I was thinking even cheaper if possible! Something to act as a second fill flash rather than a sun over powering flash. However, these models you suggest look to have TTL, would they be suitable for the D90?

Be careful buying really cheap flashes as most triggers won't handle over 12v and a lot of old stuff is 200v +.

Some of the old Canon flashes go into sleep mode very quickly, so are a waste of time for ocf work, bear that in mind when looking at those....

Am pretty sure any Canon flash ending EZ (540ez for example) doesn't have a function to turn off the sleep/standby mode (or at least alter when it kicks in), hence why most people use SBs or later canon units like the 580....
