Yes
Does it annoy you when you find people using your images all over facebook?

I suppose as a pro that it's good publicity if people are stating that they got their images from you.

I often find my images being used and passed off as their own image, usually family. I don't think it would annoy me as much if they didn't pass the images off as their own and didn't monkey with them with whichever editer application they use....or crop the image spoiling ot completely!! :bat:

Funnily enough I just checked my stats and 1 image has been linked from FB a few times, I'm suspecting a friend of mine did it as its from a holiday we were on, however I deleted my FB account ages ago so cant check, will need to ask him. I'm not too fussed about it as it's a sentimental photo from Mexico but I'd be interested to see what he did with it.

To be honest I have not had that problem with regard to photographs.

I do understand the frustration and anger it can cause though as I have had some of my graphics stolen in the past and offered for download by another website as there own, with them even putting there own copyright on them

Annoys the hell out of me - I hardly put any images there now. It is not good publicity - does me no good whatsoever - it's just copyright theft - and treated as such.

I use facebook to tag people I photograph like this:
24801_10150161640190307_259327250306_11505346_7308015_n.jpg

I find that putting a web address right near there face, they cant cut it out! :D

I saw these - love the watermark - that must be effective! :)

It would worry me more if I was any good.
Only instance I've had is my niece put a load of images from last years Glastonbury on her facebook I kicked her up the a**e and told her not to do it again, she of course just ignored me :)

If I found out that someone was using my image on facebook, I would simply delete it from wherever it was being hosted (if that's how they were nicking it) and report them to the powers that be for copyright theft. Even family. If it was possible, I would replace the stolen image with another, possibly obscene one with "Photo STOLEN from ***" flashing on it.

If you delete your facebook account and had photos that were refered to from other people's accounts, the photos dont get deleted even if your account is not active.

I see it as a compliment, surely you only have family & friends on your friends list, not complete strangers, so where is the harm in letting them share your picture, it is a social site after all. When I was shooting professionally I maintained my own business website separate from any pics I shared on facebook.

Sometimes I copy a family photo but always say "taken by ****
I've only twice copied a pic by someone i dont know and then posted a link.
However I only do this because I am a keen togger and am now aware. Before I joined this forum I wouldn't have thought about it..
I would be hacked off if one of my pics from here or Flickr was copied, but anything on facebook I feel is fair game

This is a good publicity if you look it from another angel it will have an effect on you photography work but all the same good publicity or bad publicity is good

I can't believe people still think that- if you're in control of your images then yes - but if they are just lost in the general drivel of facebook then they are of no help whatsoever to you

Not facebook, but...

I took a photo of my Nephew and sent it to my Dad at 800 or 1200px. My Sister got hold of it, printed A4 and gave it the the kids Great Grandparents as a gift. I didn't know it was happening until it actually happened.

I was annoyed that they didn't ask my permission. But I was mortified that a photo of mine had been printed so big off such a small file.

Some suprising comments on here. I wouldn't have thought anyone would be too bothered about family stealing photos so long as they don't then claim to be some expert TOG.

Also great idea Jamie, though I doubt that would stop most people who just couldn't care less.

A family member of mine has a folder of about 20 of my images and another of about 15 on facebook, she circulates them around, encouraging her close friends and other family (her inlaws etc) to copy them onto their profile too, passing them off as her photos. TBH it really does annoy me.

I only ever put stuff on facebook that I'm not worried about what happens to it. Mostly just "snaps" taken at race meetings etc
TBH I quite like it when people use my images as their profile pic as it at least shows you that they like it. :)
I do put some slightly better pics in my random gallery but if anybody wants to copy one of those then they are mad as the facebook resizing process isn't exactly kind to your images!
Sometimes people ask for full size versions to use as wallpapers & I just email them a larger version. I like that they like it :)
I do check why they want it first

The golden rule with facebook is don't put anything there you aren't comfortable with "giving away" which is effectively what you agree to in their Terms & conditions! Never mind the everchanging privacy settings leaving your stuff open all the time!

Randomly I discovered that an ex-colleague had taken a picture of me from my Facebook page and was using it as her desk top background. It was a holiday snap of me diving that my husband had taken. It sounds like she's taken a few and used them as backgrounds but what bothers me is she's always preaching about how out of order it is to illegally download music as the bands miss out on payment.

I've put a few pictures of me that were taken by classmates at college and put them on my FB but it's always with permission and I put a credit in the comments.

I really thought that was going to turn into a stalker story..............it started with FB and next thing I knew I found my pet rabbit on the stove

Yep, I learned the hard way, I don't put pics on there anymore, I put a few of my friend and I celebrating our birthdays in March, but since then, nothing....and definately none of family

My Father in Law used to regularly take my photos of my children (which were private to family and friends) and put them in his public galleries and claim they were his own. Unsurprisingly I got quite annoyed about this and finally plucked up the courage to say something - he doesn't do it now. Recently I found out he'd done similar things before to other people so he was well aware of copyright law but thought he'd do it anyway. Charming!

The photos or your children?

yes its annoying, free publicity cannot be offset against people stealing your images repeatedly.

even more annoying is that fact that you can have massively intrusive watermarking, disable caching, disable right click, disable save as, even offer them a legal way of obtaining a facebook sized image and theyll still go out of their way to steal..

like so:

Just an idea, would it not be possible to save the image as an animated .gif that flashes white every few seconds or starts white? Assuming that facebook allows .gif to be used it may only take the first frame and thus white.

Then people can't use it unless they go to the trouble to extract the frames or print screen.

Long show but maybe worth a shot, though a lot of effort really. I think the safest way is to hide the images on your site behind a clear layer to prevent right click or via flash, but as said before there's always print screen. Where there's will there's a way lol.

I can't be too harsh though, I've ripped videos off vimeo that people have tried to prevent from being downloaded. Though it has to be said that it was purely for my own enjoyment and inspiration.

my friend used mine on youtube. i didnt mind as it was my mate, but lesson learnt and i watermarked them in the corner. problem solved i now have business

Competitors at equestrian events are the worse for this type of thing. (In my opinion).

When I contacted one person about nicking my images (if she liked them so much, why didin't she buy them on the day):):) she actually wrote back along the lines of:

My uncle is a photographer and he is well aware that people take his images off his website or facebook. He's fine about it and so should you be. I have done nothing wrong in using your images. By the way, when I asked you to take photos of my younger sister, did you get my parents permission as she is a minor and my uncle said you have broken the law by taking photos of her without her parents permission. I have also been to see a solicitor (she names them) and I have been advised that I am perfectly at right to use images of myself and my sister from your website or facebook'.

That is more or less what she replied to me. Cheeky swine. Anyway, after reporting her to facebook, the images were quickly removed :)

i have seen loads that use one particular company!.... its so easily done its unreal...

my friend uses mine which tbh i have no problem with (shes my best mate). And leaves my copyright on. however i do know this is still 'breaking the rules' and not sure where she or i would stand knowing i have given her permission to use waermarked images on FB?

I think it's very wrong that FB has an option for you to copy a friend album to your profile with a single click - surely that's wrong on so many levels?

yehh it is!..

what power do you have over those pictures then.... none probably, or very difficult to prove they are yours?

thats why i only have friends on my facebook.... but watermark everything that goes on my website and Fb business page....!!

I didn't know they could do that.

I've even had people nick my images which have had a big copyright notice across their faces. :|

I upload a small selection from every gig to facebook with a "more at www.kluens.co.uk" link under them and of course the watermark in the corner, i think the traffic i get from them is worth the risk, crowd shots especially gimme loads of website hits.

I put the images up on the understanding that they will probably be pasted about to all and sundries profiles and this is fine, as long as they do not chop my logo off.

Any chopping and they get an email, if its not rectified they get an invoice, invoice not paid then the small claims court form goes in (not got that far with anyone yet).

Jamestphoto had a good one recently where he shot a band, mailed offering the images for sale, to which they declined, he then found his image, watermark free on the bands facebook page offering it up as a possible t-shirt design :D

I had seven people use photos from the same event as their facebook profile photo. I was suitably impressed tbh lol. I don't condone it, but they were all friends and as such were never going to buy any photos as I wasn't there in any official capacity. I watermark nearly all of my photos, although it is a bit obscure (just "IF") at least people know that somebody else took them.

If I were losing business I would look at it differently for sure.

I read this thread earlier today about people using others photos when low & behold my local Herald & Post dropped through my door tonight and there on the back page a photo I took at the BUPA Xcountry at Holyrood earlier this year is plastered over the back page around A5 in size!!!!!!!!!
