does dust on front of lens show on photos?

Hi everyone

Just on holiday and on the front lens there is a bit of dust but have nothing to clean it..

I know if it is on the sensor it shows on the photos but not sure about lens

Your help is appreciated as always
 
No it won't show unless its huge clumps. You can crack the front element of your lens and still get unaffected images.

Get back to enjoying your holiday and don't worry about it!
 
I would imagine anything on lens will in theory effect the photo?

It could effect the sharpness of images.

How much however will depend on the size and density.

Do you not have a clean cloth you can use? (Check your sunglasses case!)
 
A few specs will have no effect what so ever. A complete covering of crap could/would affect image quality and something like a raindrop or a snowflake will show up.
 
It massively depends on what aperture you are using.

Not really.

If it is actually specs of stuff you could shoot blue skies at f64 all day long as the front of the lens is so far from the sensor it just wont matter.
 
In the old days before we could afford soft focus filters and we did not have software :D one recommendation for portraits of women was to put a piece of nylon stocking across the front of the lens and shoot through that to give a soft focus look. Quite often that was too soft so you could burn a few holes in the stocking with a match or cigarette to reduce the effect a bit.

Usually no, although I have an UWA where it does :(
 
You might get a bit of flare if shooting into the sun but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I bet you have something you can wipe a few specs of dust with, assuming you don't plan on going in there like you are cleaning the oven :lol: I am pretty certain there are hundreds of articles on the internet predicting all manner of doom and gloom if you go anywhere near it with anything other than a lens cloth. A clean corner of a cotton shirt used as one off will do no harm at all to even the cheapest of modern lenses, the coatings are just a bit tougher then that. As already said, no they won't affect your images either. ;)
 
I cant understand why youd go on holiday and not take some cleaning kit :s dust will product flare and depending on what your shooting show up on the shot. Generally dust spots are a common pain to photographers but flare isnt to east to remedy.
I tend to clean my gear the night before a planned shoot.

Only bought it second hand week before I went and never had dlsr before so didn't have any previous kit
 
Just wipe it with your t-shirt.
 
It's alright guys I'm back home but thank you for all your input will put some photos up at some point :-)
 
both the cracked front element vs image quality articles I was going to link to has been brought up already :lol: the 2 articles has really changed my view on dust on the lens, i used to be really OCD about it :p

if its just tiny bits give it a good blow, or if it is really bothering you then take a tissue and just wipe/brush them off gently
