I realise that lens quality plays a large part, but does the body make any difference.

Say a 400D compared to a 50D, 5D, 5Dmk2
 
Good question actually. Obviously you have the option of the different Picture Styles if you shoot jpegs. I reckon the progression in Digic processors makes a difference to 'out of the camera' colour. On the other hand, if you shoot RAW it's probably pretty academic as you have so much leeway at your disposal with the processing.
 
Surely its down to w/b values in firmware.
There was a definite shift to cooler, from a d70 to a d200 I noticed, which was even more pronounced when shooting sigma on the d70 and nikon on the d200.
 
Oh yes I forgot to say, on the standard setting shooting raw, uploading with the same software and same lens
 
I should imagine then, raw on standard everything the tone / colours etc will be down to whatever software you process on. Same processing should get the same tone and colour whatever the camera. In theory anyway!
 
A sensor with a greater dynamic range capability would allow a wider tonal range to be captured. It's not specifically down to the photosites themselves but the filter, like the lens, would influence this.

My first comparison between a 5D and a 1D showed a marked difference in colour. As I understand it, it's a combination of metering and how white balance is applied. Some cameras clearly do it differently to others. Having said all of that, use PS and you should be able to make them look virtually the same.

Hmmm, didn't a member do a test/comparison with a 5D, 20D, 30D and 40D last year? It was very interesting as the differing tones and colour interpretations were quite apparent, I'm sure it was on here but I carn find it!

I've searched high and low but I can't find it, there's a few others on the net but it's not the one I remember seeing.

I'm positive it was on TP.

The images were of the apex of some kind of crypt roof if that helps to ring any bells?......

In the first link the difference is amazing!
Im torn between the 3rd and 4th picture, maybe the 3rd is the best but it is much darker.
