Its a free photo editing program. Quite powerful, especially considering its free :)


Ive got photoshop CS5 but the mrs has just downloaded it so i have as well so i can hopefully teach it to her (shes new to this type of thing). Since im new to it as well im always on the lookout for tutorials, theres some here that may help. :thumbs:

Throes using it but find aperture 3 and photoshop so much better and easier to use

Same, photoshop rocks my world. Also considering portrait professional as well but thats for another thread....

If you are using gimp but are familiar with Photoshop there is a free gimp add-on called gimpshop which changes the layout and functions to be more like Photoshop for those who prefer it.

I got tired of my old Photoshop 5, and decided to try Gimp once again.
The Gimp is very capable, and is has the ability to run scripts, both your own and downloaded ones.
You can find a ton of plug-ins and scripts by Googling, and also lots of tutorials.
I admit The Gimp has a steeeep learning curve.
 
You can do some editing on RAW files using either
UFRaw or Photivo
Both are freeware, and will integrate with The Gimp.

Photivo is the more advanced of the two, and imho good at noise reduction.
 
Gardener - Have you used UFRaw previously - what differences did you notice if you moved to Photivo? I use UFRaw but worrying that I'm missing out on something better.

I'm an avid Gimp user (avid rather than advanced for sure), but have gone through a very steep learning curve. Here are some links that might help you get in to it...

to be honest the best is probably the youtube tut's as you can see what they do.

PS - think it's 2.6 you have rather than 3.6. The next stable version that I am getting fed up waiting for is 2.8.

I am in the same position as you, I found it impossible to find brushes and other things for Photoshop 5. I tried gimp years ago when I had a dabble with linux but I found it pretty poor back then, It has certainly come a long way since then.
 
I've been using Photivo for Windows for the first time today, and have been impressed by its capabilities. The user interface needs some work: the slidebars cannot be used with any precision as the set value only displays for an instant before the processing commences.
 
I loaded it on the girlfriends laptop over the weekend.
Looks good for a freebie :thumbs:
 
Gimp is awesome. Get the High pass filter script for sharpening, UFraw for raw conversion and wavelet denoise to remove noise. You wont be disappointed.
