Does anyone know what this black stuff is? It's like some sort of silicone but I'm not sure if it's that neutral cure stuff or just the small tubes you get for computer stuff. This is the only image I can find which seems to show it.
I think it is more of a resin as it's hard and shiny but has that almost sticky feel to it. Just not sure exactly what it is. It reminds me of that stuff you can get to repair emergency leaks in your roof.
if it's hard to the touch, the chances is it's potting compound as linked above. Generally used to stabilise/imobilise and insulate electrical components where they won't need to be taken to bits again - can alse be used to actually encapsulate a whole bunch of components into a single block.
if it's slightly softer, with a rubbery kind of texture, it's probably something like this... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Insulating-Tape-Liquid-Electrical-Black/dp/B000LNKIFS - this is used more like a more versatile version of heatshrink insulation - either because you forgot to put the heatshrink in place before you built the components up (oops, been there more times than I should really admit on a public forum) OR because the whole assembly is just a little too fiddly to add the heatshrink OR because the components you're covering are thermally fragile (think thermo-fuses) and can't be exposed to the heat to shrink the insulation.
