Does anybody ever buy gear that they never end up using?

No, I buy many things I don't use right away, and may not use for many many months, but everything gets used.

Most of the time I see things that I know are good and superb pre owned value on Ebay and buy them, later they get used.

I bought a mint 1.4x converter three months ago and may not use it for many months to come but I know when I do want it next summer it would either have cost much more or I wouldn't find one pre owned.

I Have a nifty time saving device for that...... its called a 'wife'

It was my wife who gave me the final push to buy the D700 - she said "If you go and buy the firkin' thing, will it shut you up about it?" (I may have been extoling its virtues for a while and just may have been about to buy it anyway).
My money is mine to do what I want with and she's allowed to buy any clothes/shoes etc that she can afford.

Sold 4,then brought 2 more :D

Only last week, I was looking to buy a shoulder bag, had to be a SHOULDER bag.

Given some great advise by TP members on which bag would suit my needs etc, so what do I do?

Buy a backpack!! What a plonker!

But camera bags.. I can't say I have one I don't use.. I have six or seven that I do use regularly (some of these are used for accessories/film only), and I still haven't got the right one for airline travel..
That's a consolation to someone who bought two more bags last month, as yet unused. (The first was a bargain but the second was a bigger bargain so I had to have that too.) I may show this to my wife to prove I'm not the only one suffering from the affliction.

Same here they were good buys, and I am using one :D

My tripod is under-used, we have a love hate relationship.

The main thing is a collection of bags. I still have not found 'the one' that does all I want it two so have endless bags all over the place with odd bits of kit in. Id also say the more 'creative' filters are less utilised such as the ND8 filter.

I bought a 77mm B&W 10 Stop about 3 months ago.

I haven't even got around to putting it on the lens.
