i have just had some photographs done by a department store photography studio of my baby and the prints i received had a bright line around the face making the head look like it had been added to the body using some sort of photo shop has anyone any idea what causes this

Is it a badly done hairlight (used to create separation from the background)?

Or it could be a dodgy photoshop job - we can't really help without seeing it, and you have to be careful how you show it bearing in mind the copyright belongs to the photographer.

In addition to what Phil says, have you told them you're not happy with this photo ?

It could be either the autocorrect function on the software that they're using or the red-eye correction. If they know their machines, they should be able to turn this off and it should print without the imperfections.
