Dodgy batteries and chargers?

There is a significant degree of risk involved in charging all batteries. counterfeit or not.
the risk can be with the charger or the battery or indeed the wiring.
It is unwise to charge anything over night, whilst out, or unattended.

For maximum safety it would be best to do all charging away from combustibles materials, and better still in a fireproof container.

All lithium batteries present a greater risk, of fire and explosion, that other types of battery in general use.

However most of us take no special precautions at all.
I am surprised that no one seems to sell a purpose made domestic container for such use. Perhaps insurance companies should sponsor such a thing.

Many Many years ago I worked for the Remington corporation on the development team of the first generation of rechargeable batteries in electric razors .. a few thousand were sent out f.o.c to users/testers on the basis they were returned every 3 months with comments on performance etc .. one that I dealt with that has stuck in my mind was a gent who left his on charge overnight to find in the morning it had melted and burned it’s way through his sideboard and melted his carpet . Luckily no fire though

'An online buy left our home destroyed by fire'

Big step really.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said its investigation had not identified a definite cause of the fire.
"Due to the structural integrity of the building the [fire investigation team] could not enter the whole site," a spokesman for the LFB said. "The fire was confirmed as accidental but the actual cause was recorded as undetermined."
Forensic experts commissioned by Leigh Day have found the battery pack, which is now under examination.

Understandable maybe to be looking for someone to fill the gap left by the failure to renew their insurance.

one problem about Lithium battery fires is that they are virtually impossible to put out. You can stop them spreading, but you must wait for them to burn them selves out.
That is equally true when they are in Phones and the like. At the least sign of smoke, or heating up best to dump them outside. as you can not stop them. burning or exploding.

Few of us would have the means of picking them up or containing them once they had got going.
probably all you can do is soak the surrounding, area and put a pan over them to contain sparks, and get away from the toxic fumes.

It has been demonstrated many times that a fireproof bag will not contain a lithium battery fire or explosion.
Though I agree that such bags are sold for the purpose. neither are aluminium containers suitable. the best seem to be steel containers with fireproof linings.

Something like this seems the best bet but even that has its limits if you watch to the end.

Just think how many houses are burnt down and people killed, by fires started by a smouldering cigarette.
How much more effective, as a fire lighter, would be a small camera battery or phone?
A central safe storage and charging point in every house, would make some sense..
preferably vented to the outside, as the smoke is both toxic and extremely difficult to clean up.
