Do you use lens straps on walkabouts for big zooms ?

Yes
was just wondering what the consensus is regarding carry a heavy zoom around all day at say a wildlife centre or wetland centre.

Do you just carry by the tripod mount or do you have a specific means of carrying over the shoulder.

I am not talking about carrying the lens attached to camera and said camera with a strap on, don't want to put stress on the lens mount.

I use the strap that came with my Canon 500mm mkii and use the strap loops on the lens itself.

I use a heavy duty optech sling strap on my 500mm, attached through the strap loops and via a leash on a arca clamp onto the lens tripod mount. I am a little paranoid so the strap has been modified slightly so there is no single point of failure. I also use a leash loop to ensure the camera body as a second attachment point other than just the lens mount.

Depending on my mood, light, expected subjects I either go with

A) peak design strap attached to the lens mounting point and slung over my shoulder. Sits nice at the hip and is comfortable for hours of walking. Easy to bring camera up to shoot handheld.

B) Monopod with Gimbal and then I rest it on my shoulder to take the weight. Offfers more stability Imid the light is low or I expect to have to wait for ‘the moment’

C) tripod and gimbal, carried over shoulder. Need to make sure you trust you clamp etc and consider an extra anchour line. This options tends to be for more static shooting for when I know a long wait is needed.

This is all with a D850/500f4e combination. I would guess 50% I go with just the strap, 30% monopod.

Hope it helps.

Robert, which version of the peak design are you using, do you attach it to the tripod mount so that it balances the lens/camera out ??

I use a BlackRapid twin strap setup, most of the time the second strap is redundant and I hook it to my belt loop to take some of the weight (and keep my trousers up :) ) but occasionally put the 150-600 sigma on it via the tripod foot. When I do this, I shorten the strap so its not banging off my hip.

If I'm carrying the camera with the 100-400 fitted, I've usually got the rucksack on my back so I'll often tuck the lens's tripod foot behind the rucksack's chest strap to take the weight off my neck.

I use the Peak Design Slide with the latest anchors, been solid. I mount to the dedicate strap mounts on either side of he main body of the 500e shown below.

It site nice around the Hip without causing discomfort due to weight or balance. turn the strap so the griped side is away from your body and its easy to slide up when taking a shot.

Canon strap which comes with the 400mm f2.8 - fits to lugs either side of tripod mount on lens - much more substantial than the ones which attach to a body

Having dropped my previous 400 from shoulder height I use the proper strap as much as I can - took a bit of getting used to but it works well
