Do you use a screen protector?

My main body is a 5DIII and I was thinking it might be a good idea to protect the screen. Normally this would seem like a pretty easy decision but one of the nice features on the new 5DIII is the high resolution on the back panel. I do not want to lose resolution or take away from that so I'm not sure if this is a good idea. What do you think?

Don't see the need. The screen is designed to be used, it's not a toy. It takes a fair whack to do any real damage to it. I just use it as it's intended, and if somehow it does get cracked, it's not hugely expensive to replace as it's likely just the plastic protective screen that will crack anyway.
 
ive have one, dont go cheap, stops me scratching the thing (I scratch everything), ive got rubber moulded cases as well, give a bit of protection from the rain and keeps it generally clean from marks etc.. so when I do sell, the equipment will at least look still decent and no as worn as it probably is...
 
yep I use one and its fine, Just don't buy one of these anti-reflective ones, Everything looks smudged, you lose a massive amount of resolution.
 
Your screen already has a protector fitted. (What you're looking at isn't the screen itself, but a pane of 'glass' in front of it.) If you damage it, it's relatively cheap to replace.

Don't Canon some with one supplied? Not bought a new Canon for ages, but Nikon have a clip on screen protector that's crystal clear.

Canon don't have the extra one like Nikon do. As said though, they all have a protective cover built in. I managed to smash my 1D, didn't cost much to get it sorted - could've done it for even less myself if I wasn't so lazy.

They seem pretty tough though. We have 5DMkIIs and 5DMkIIIs at work, and students properly abuse them. I've never seen one with a particularly badly scratched screen. The odd little mark here and there is all. If only they build the reflex mirror mountings as well :)
 
I use the clip on ones that came with my Nikon DSLRs but I don't use them on any of the other cameras I have. I have them on all the touchscreen devices I use (phone, tablet, netbook).
While I don't particularly baby my kit, I do treat it with a little respect and don't tend to put myself in situations where damage is likely.
 
I don't see the point. I never had and have never had a problem in the last 5 years of DSLR'ing. And just to be clear, i carry my camera with me all day, every day. Deserts, seas, rainforests. My camera has fallen off of moving jeeps and gets smacked into rocks/trees/walls when i bump into things trekking... and no problems with the screen... no scratches! :) And even it was scratched, as long as i could see the histogram, it would be fine, and it is not massively expensive to replace, and even less if it is insured for accidents! :)
 
I try to remember to flip he screen over so the screens protected when not in use but I usually forget so I bought one for my 70D. I think it does loose a very small bit of clarity but hardly noticeable and the touch screen works just as well.
 
Only on plastic screens, anything with a glass screen i don't bother.

Rubber moulded cases can protect your camera from knocks but they can cause damage to your camera from the crud that can get trapped between the rubber and the camera body.

....and the 5D MK 3 actually has a glass screen cover, only the lcd window on the top is plastic.

This is just not true.
It's not like on the older cameras where it's just a piece of Perspex, the outer screen protector is more integrated with the screen and is not at all easy to change. This info can be found with a quick google search.

Another for for the glass GGS protector. I've had one on mine for 18 months and don't have any issue with it.

It is cheap to replace and this place will install it for free. I'm sticking to no cover. Thanks.

my mum managed to graze her nex screen with a rear lens cap, guess it got pushed into it hard.

the clip on ones look ugly imo, and can get bits in them, prefer the hard stick on ones

Yes that is cheap. I live in the U.S. so there is no VAT and I can keep the great resolution I paid for.
 
never needed one. I use a Hoodman Loupe though so I can see in bright sunlight
 
An unprotected screen is a beautiful thing, whether it's on a camera or on a phone so I don't blame you for wanting to use it bare :) personally, I just don't trust myself not to ruin either so I use protectors :lol: the Nikons I have just use the clip on ones, the beauty of them? They take half a second to remove or install if I change my mind :)
 
My Canon 70D goes as naked as the day she was born. But I am in the habit of flipping the articulated screen closed when I put the body away.

I always carry a microfiber cloth to wipe and polish the surface when it gets greasy from my nose after looking through the viewfinder!

It's a touchscreen on the 70D but I don't use LiveView and that feature as much as I thought I would.
 
Never had a screen protector on any of the cameras I've owned, never felt the need. But then again I don't have a screen protector on my tablet or phone.

If 5x the cost is cheap then I dunno what's dear. Fair enough if someone does / doesn't want one then that's their choice but a decent protector makes no difference to the visible resolution of the screen. If it was going on the end of the lens though, well that's a whole other thing.

That's not cheap compared to just using a decent screen protetor that won't degrade the image.
It would also invalidate your warrenty if the camera is within that period (might not be for you, but could be for others).

I'm not sure what the comment about keeping the great resolution you paid for is about. What exactly do you think a decent screen protector does?
Also that link doesn't mention where this screens come from. There is no mention of them being the same quality as the Canon screen, you could end up with worse quality anyway.

Each to his own. I don't use them on any of my devices other than my 5D. Never used one on my 60D and that got a scuff mark on it. Used one on my 40D though.

I don't think that screen protectors allow you to use the touchscreen. Or at the very least they will interfere with your finger gestures.
 
I wasn't that keen on them either but few years ago I saw a glass protector on a friend's camera and decided to give it a go. Few days after fitting my camera with one, short story, my camera screen hit a tree and broke the glass protector with no damage what so ever to the main screen. Ever since I use them n every camera.
 
I'm left eyed so my nose leaves horrible greasy marks on the screen. I use the Nikon clip on protector as I find it a bit easier to clean. No other reason.
 
I use the clip-on cover on my D800 and I bought one for the X-Pro1 because the screen sits proud of the body a bit.
 
I've got a GGS protector on my 5D3 and I haven't noticed any real drop off of resolution on the times I use it. With the photo blown up to full the image looks pin sharp on the screen. I have the top screen protected by the GGS kit too as I scratched the one on my first 7D and didn't want to risk it again. I haven't got a screen protector for my 70D as it's a touchscreen as RedRobin mentioned, but I have recently seen some that are able to still take advantage of the touchscreen functions but I can't find them again at the moment.

Ive got a GGS Protector too - been on the camera since new. No brainer for me, i like the additional protection.
 
i tend to use them on my cameras they cost pennies and can avoid the odd scuff

if your as cheap as me when it comes to screen protectors i buy ipad screen protectors and cut them to size for the camera , mobile phone etc :)
 
Don't use a screen protector on anything....cameras, phone, tablet or TV.
 
GGS :plus1:. Got them on my 1Dx & 6D. Doesn't affect resolution one bit and for me it's just a personal preference
