Do you use a head with your monopod or not?

No
Just interested as to what people do, and which heads they use and how they use them.

I use one so I can switch from landscape to portrait quickly. It's a Manfrotto 234RC atop a 679B 'pod. It also allows a QR to match other supports I use without having to remove the camera plate.

393 head on my old Giottos monopod, seems to work better than the built in head.

Tried using one but didn't like it. Only time I use the monopod is with longer lenses which have a collar anyway so I tend to leave the collar loose and moving from portrait to landscape orientation is nice and easy :)

Yep use one with my 679B, helps with portrait mode, particularly for sports.

Another one using the 393 head for a £100 an absolute steal:thumbs:

Ah well, that's blown it anyway. Can't get the head off my tripod tonight - so may have to give it a miss anyway

I tried mine with a head but it added too much weight and as dod does I only really use it for the long lens with a collar so don't need a head.

Well, i'm gonna be trying it out tomorrow with my new lens, and that has a tripod collar, so I will use it like that I think.

Tried a head but didn't like it so sold it to canon Bob last week now I just use
a RRS QR clamp and very happy with the set up.

Try a 393 head on one for long lenses, the difference is amazing.........

And I don't know the answer yet but this was a cheap way to find out

Bob

I use it with a colar so no I don't use a head.

I tried mine without a head but it was impossible to achieve a tighter downward angle without leaning forwards like I was doing the Carolina Shag.
If your on higher grounds to the action your shooting how else do you tilt the camera?

I tend to use a ball head so you can angle the monopod and still get the camera/lens pointing where you want it (although I tend to use the collar on the lens for switching between portrait and landscape)

This article suggests different ways of using a monopod (which you may or may not agree with...)

How to use a monopod

Another one using the 393 here. Great bit of kit for the money.

I use a Manfrotto 323 head on top of my monopod - makes life a whole lot easier...

i use a manfrotto 234 with a markins arca swiss plate on top as i have an RRS L bracket and replacement RRS foot for my 70-200 and 80-400, works great for me
