On my way home from taking the kids out today I saw this onld dead tree in the middle of a lovely rape sead field and whipped my camera out for a shot. Because we had to park in the middle of a country road I only had a minute or 2 to fire a few shots off.

After coming home and checking them they havent really turned out well at all, not that I was holding up much hope due to the time issues I had. This is the best of the bunch and was wondering if it could be 'rescued' at all in post processing??

Im pretty much a novice with photoshop so was wondering what others could make of it??

This is completely unprocessed from my end so feel free to play around.

You should start by telling us what you think is wrong with it. Did you shoot in RAW?

Not sure about the processing but do think these type of shots normally look better in landscape.

Theres no hard and fast rule that state I have to shoot a landscape in a vertical or horizontal framing to be honest. I like to try different things and I personally liked the oprientation of this shot. I also have 2 or 3 in landscape format which ill be working on also, they have all come out like this though :(

What do I think is worng with it? Well i think the focus is slightly out plus the sky isnt great too, looks a little bland and off colour. There some good cloud formations and i would have liked it to be a blue sky with white clouds.

Did you shoot raw? I think the main problem is the very flat light - good light on this shot would have brought it to life.

Yes I shot RAW. Ive tried p[laying around with it in photoshop but as yet ive been unsuccessful in trying to bring it to life

Ok I might have gone a bit over the top here, but I went for a bit of a HDR look and made it landscape, I also darkened the tracks as they make a nice lead in.
(hope you don't mind) Wayne

What were you focusing on? looking at the exif it's shot at F9 at 1/3200 sec at 1000 iso, that should give a fair depth of field.
EDIT. I had a play with your landscape and with a bit of all over sharpening and selecting the rape seed and boosting the midtone contrast on that made a big difference.

I shot in Aperture Priority and tried to focus about a third of the way in to the frame (trying hyper focal focusing at the moment??) so the focus was mainly on the flowers and not on the tree or sky.

Feel free to post up your edited version mate

I am a total noob, but why not shoot with smaller aperture, to focus the whole scene?

Why were you shooting a static subject at 1/3200 sec and at 1000 ISO? You would have got a better result at a lower ISO and it seems that would have been possible. However f/9 should have given you plenty DoF for this. You appear to have focussed on a distance 6.68 meters from the camera - that's hardly 1/3 of the way into the shot I would guess. I think you shold probably focus on the tree.

Why not just go back and re-shoot - would be worth it - and less time consuming than PP ? If you're uncertain about where to focus - try a selection of shots and choose the best later.

Well I think the shadow on the rapeseed in the far middle distance would benefit from being lightened as would the sky to give a more airier feel to the image given the subject, but that's just my personal feelings and taste, others may differ

I have no idea lol, i tried shooting as few using aperture priority and those were the4 setting the camera chose. I also tried a few in manual at f11 and f16 with ISO's of 200, 400 and 800 as i was practicing my focusing and settings. Ideally i would have loved to have an hour there to compose the shot better ands take my time but i had the kids and wife with me so time was very much limited. I produced some shots focusing on the tree, some focusing on the near seeds and some middle seeds to see how this was alter the final result.
