Do you think it may be because MS servers are too busy???

as said, clear out the softwaredownload folder (google) and try again.

if your internet isnt amazing or has dropped then it could be a corrupt update/file.

it certainly shouldn't be a common issue (at least ive never had it on 150mb VM).

I would also suspect microsoft will be allocating less resources to W7 going forward.
They will be giving bandwidth to current OS.

with another 4 years on W7 extended support i doubt they'll be doing that. besides there are older OS than W7 getting updates from WU (vista - until next year, server 2008 - until 2020).

I managed 800+ PCs and laptops in a school running Windows XP then Windows 7 via WSUS & we regularly had problems like this which were solved by neil_g's suggestion of clearing out the software download folder & restarting services.

FWIW

I think I am going to have to bite the bullet but may not be able to everything until sometime during the day of 29th July.

As noted by landwomble I need to double check my backups but will do as follows:-

Use Macrium Reflect to take an image of my W7 OS
Download the W10 driver for my nVidia GPU
Download Classic Shell in readiness ;)
ref Emails the one program I have never found to date was one to backup my MS Office 2007 Outlook email folder in a form that allows for access should Outlook 'go south', does such exist and is there another strategy I should use that could be recommended???

I cannot readily think of anything else................no???
