Do you take your dslr on your hols ?

It will be a yes when I go on holiday. I have no money left after buying it all in order to actually pay for a holiday though :shake:

It would never occur to me not to take my DSLR. In fact, I can't remember the last time I left the house without it! I'm heading to Nepal for 2 weeks in May and Canada for 3 weeks in September - there's no way I"d leave it at home.

I took mine while I was living in Cyprus for 6 months and knew little about getting good shots and different environmental factors (sea + sand); got dust in the lens and on the sensor and in attempt to clean the latter I knocked a spring out of the auto-focus mirror that I couldn't get back in and had nowhere to get it repaired. On returning to the UK I got the camera repaired then sold it due to needing the cash for the bills.

Conclusion? I lost money due to the repair (£150) and have been without a camera for 6 months and have only went and treated myself to another on Friday, which I am anxiously waiting to arrive at my door in the next few days. In effect I lost a passion and a hobby for a long time that I could have spent improving, experimenting, learning, gaining satisfaction...

... so was it worth taking my camera away with me at the cost of what I lost? I discovered I love landscape photography, improved drastically in terms of knowledge in composition, correct aperture vs. shutter speeds, experimentation, having a VAST difference in subject matter that would have never been achieved where I now live, learned that sunshine is not a myth, generally improved 10 fold in all of my beginner traits and took the best pictures I have to date.

Take that camera everywhere.

I tend to plan 'away-trips' around the photography and/or the driving...
Holiday? What's that?

If I haven't got my backpack on I feel really unbalanced, even take it to the shops for a pint of milk :cuckoo: well, you never know :D

I take mine on all holidays. Recently took it to Malaysia and carried it absolutely everywhere with me and took some great pictures (well I thought so until I posted the most recent one on here). The only time I don't have it with me on holiday is when I am snorkelling/diving :-)

I wouldn't consider leaving it at home.

Used to take the d200 drove the wife mad last year got myself a little panasonic lx3 great little camera, great for them wide angle shots.

Always take most of my stuff with me.

I've taken a DSLR with me for the past 5 years or so (and sometimes a compact as well) but the last holiday I got tired of lugging it's bulk around (D700 + 24-70 = heavy), and ended up taking most of the pictures on a compact. In future, it's going to be compact only, as the quality off it is more than adequate for holiday snaps.

Thanks for the advice guys, looks like I should take it then! If I do will my Lowepro Fastpack 200 pass as hand luggage when going by air? Also will my travel insurance cover my camera or do I need seperate insurance for it? Thanks again

Mine gets slung in the bag no matter where I go, happily spent a week in Atlanta and 2 weeks in the Bahamas with it, not once was I worried about it being nabbed, or becoming damaged.

Then again, that has never worried me, the thing has been out with me in London raving (when drunk) and I never thought twice about not taking it.

What would be the point in having a camera, the you know how to use, only to leave it at home and take a smaller compact that may not be up to the job? I would make sure on the insurance, just in case ;)

no, it's too heavy & bulky for me.

I'm selling most of my SLR gear, have bought a panasonic GF1 and a leica...

Always take mine along on holiday, but don't necessarily lug it round at all times.

If by the pool, or just shopping or something, will just take the P&S. If out sightseeing, will take the SLR.

As has been said above, on the occasions I have not had the SLR with me, I have found myself wishing I had!!

I always take the DSLR with me. I use a Tamrac Expidetion 5X backpack and load my kit into that for holidays.

Took the D700, SB900, 24-70mm, 105mm and a laptop with me to Florida :-) Got some lovely shots and would have kicked myself if I hadn't taken it.

I plan my holiday with photography in mind.
I also go to Glastonbury every year and my DSLR and a number of lenses always accompany me, there are so many photo ops there that it would be a crime not to take it.

my D60 goes everywhere, not sure if I had a £1k+ camera it would.

I kind of have a "who cares" attitude with the D60 mainly because it's quite cheap and I only have a couple of cheap lenses.

To use in situation where you are doing things where it might get broken???

For instance, downhill mountain biking, throwing £2k worth of kit in a bag in order to be able to take some photos with the risk of breaking it if you come off OR using £500 worth of kit?

This will be my first holiday with a DSLR and it is going with me, my wife said i shouldent but going to egypt and not taking it would be a crime.
I said even if it only gets used a couple of times it will be worth it, I cannot see the point in spending 3K on a hobby and not useing it.

spike

As Spike says, if you've spent a tidy sum of money on your hobby, it would be mad to not take it with you.

Just make sure you've got a good insurance policy!

I have taken mine to spain twice with no probs.
only ever took kits lens though.

dont be changing lenses on a windy beach lol.

I only have £500 of away from home cover, not sure if the holiday insurance would coer it, but i only have a canon 350d which is gettin a bit old now.

i say take it, but mine stayed with me 24/7.
