I took mine while I was living in Cyprus for 6 months and knew little about getting good shots and different environmental factors (sea + sand); got dust in the lens and on the sensor and in attempt to clean the latter I knocked a spring out of the auto-focus mirror that I couldn't get back in and had nowhere to get it repaired. On returning to the UK I got the camera repaired then sold it due to needing the cash for the bills.
Conclusion? I lost money due to the repair (£150) and have been without a camera for 6 months and have only went and treated myself to another on Friday, which I am anxiously waiting to arrive at my door in the next few days. In effect I lost a passion and a hobby for a long time that I could have spent improving, experimenting, learning, gaining satisfaction...
... so was it worth taking my camera away with me at the cost of what I lost? I discovered I love landscape photography, improved drastically in terms of knowledge in composition, correct aperture vs. shutter speeds, experimentation, having a VAST difference in subject matter that would have never been achieved where I now live, learned that sunshine is not a myth, generally improved 10 fold in all of my beginner traits and took the best pictures I have to date.
Take that camera everywhere.
