do you prefer 30mm or 50mm fixed on crop sensor bodies?

had a fixed 50 for a while and got a 28mm on its way (hopefully) but just curious as to what people prefer-i know strictly speaking 35 is the ´new´ 50 inasmuch as its the crop sensor equivalent but ive loved my 50 thus far and intrigued to see if ill prefer the 28 over it. there are times the 50 is just too damned close but then most of the time i move backwards and there are times when i need the reach of the 50 for sly shots. what have others found?

i have to say im probably more excited about getting this 50 quid 28mm than the 350 quid telephoto. once ive had a play with it ill decide whether to invest in a good nikkor 50 or the sigma 30.....exciting!

What 28mm?

If its the 28mm f/2.8 AI-S, thats a stunner!

The 30mm Sigma f/1.4 is my preference on a crop sensor.

Ditto. Although I do fancy trying the new Nikkor 35/f/1.8 DX on my D40.

That might upset the apple cart, as generally I've always preferred the Sigma on crop, over the 35/2.

Oddly, my Sigma 20mm 1.8 EX has pretty much made my Nikon 50mm 1.8 redundant.

So my vote is for 20mm.

sadly not as nice a version as that, an e series because it was cheaper and im using an e series 50mm and its ok

defintiely 30mm but the sigma 30 is DX lens, which i have never liked. instead i have a 28mm 1.8, it's not as crisp as the nikkor, but gives excellent field of view

30mm, although that new 35mm f/1.8 sound like the bargain of the century after the March 1 price rises ;)

I've loved using my 50 F1.8 and have recently purchased a 28mm f2.8 which I'm hoping will be just as much fun. I'm also hoping canon will follow nikons lead and release a cheap 35mm f1.8 lens which the crop sensor market has been waiting years for!

only ever tried 50mm and find its ok, could be wider, time to try out a 30mm

yeah i wont be paying 420 notes i dont think. if the prices are better in the states id get a mate to bring one over, otherwise itll be here or fleabay. assuming i dont favour the 50mm of course

scrap that then

Still £349 in most places.

Seems to have gone up about £50, from a £299 low.

Personally while I think the Sigma 50mm is a superb lens I really don't think that £400+ is good value. £300 is about right I think.

Strange how the 50mm Sigma is cheaper than the 30mm Sigma for Nikon fit atm.

Thankful I bought the 30mm from Amazon for £235 when I did. :)

I love the fov provided by 30-35mm range.
It's a pity I have been unlucky enough to have significant problems with the 30mm F1.4 - only good one I ever had was the first one and I sold it because I wasn't using it enough!

Now my love is the 35mm F1.4 from canon - I don't have one but it is frankly an awesome lens from the time I used it!

I know its Canon fit, but the 50mm 1.8 on my 400D is awesome, really impressive IQ, and at only £80 its a bargain as well!! Sure its close on a crop, but the images it produces are brilliant. I could really get into primes, I find they are more enjoyable to use as you have to work harder for the pics.

Never tried a 30mm (or there abouts) prime, I'd imagine they're pretty useful though...
