Is it not just a discussion, on a discussion board?

it was.

Now it's turned into a select few bulldozing their ideas on the rest and then some petty squibbles, personal insults and baiting.

Time to close up methinks

We could always just look at the poll results!

Around 10% of people turn out to be ignorant. That is pretty good going when in my experience around 90% of people are generally ignorant. Well done forum.

I disagree, on the whole I think it's remained constructive throughout with some really good contributions (on both sides). I can't see any baiting, insults or petty squabbles (none that steer things too far off topic anyway).

I agree! If one person sees this thread as finished, maybe best they ignore it?

i'll not bite on the last bit and show you posts where you yourself have baited.

let's continue then, who's ready for the next round?

ding, ding!

I'll liken it to real ale.

Photography is a passion of mine but it's not my biggest passion, thats brewing. I've always liked real ale but as I have got more into it I have read a lot about the history of brewing and history of breweries.

It's made my enjoy my hobby more, but I would have still enjoyed the ale had I not done research so each to their own

Yes, it would be a pity to close it because of one person has had enough of it.

I agree, but the staffroom looks like an Ansel Adams lovefest there are SO many RTM's about this one thread.

So, if you don't want it closing, can I suggest you all discuss your differences of opinion in a grown up way, without getting personal, baiting, and generally bickering like kids in a playground.

well said!

Thanks Yv. Why so many RTM's? Is it really that bad, in your opinion?

Seems a bit strange.

Anyway, it was ticking along nicely until this morning. Back on topic!

Oh its just the usual, "run of the mill stuff" :D
People complaining about people baiting, certain people.
Then others rising to the bait, and
generally being (as they see it) rude to them or other members. ;)

Ah I see. Blimey, I don't envy you having to filter the genuine complaints from the tit-for-tat. On the other hand, I imagine some of it's quite amusing in small doses. :D

Thanks for explaining, Cobra.

Trying to get my thread back on topic now .....

.... Well, I'm glad I made this thread as by the poll results my theory was correct. I thought it must be a very select few who hadn't heard of Adams. Only 7.46% haven't.

I don't think anyone is saying you have to look. I'm saying I don't understand the reluctance to look, I.e. "I know what I like". It seems very close minded to me.

Look at something and decide you don't like it? Fine.
Decide you don't like something before looking? Why would someone choose to do that?

Street and landscape photography bores me so I'm not going to bother making an effort to look at it. So why would I seek out "famous photographers" of these genres.

Nobody is suggesting you go actively looking for photographers you don't like, the point being made is how can anyone make a decision on what they like or not if they don't look. If as you say the genre bores you that's no reason not to look up a photographer of a style that you do like is it? in the search for inspiration if you need it.

Once again:

I'm the original person in question but it's a bit unfair to call me ignorant for it.

If you haven't heard of gluconeogenesis before would that make you ignorant???

Indeed, ignorant is not the term to use here.

Yes. Of that subject... What resolves it is a quick flick to wikipedia

If I had any interest in biology and metabolism and hadn't heard of it then yes I would be very ignorant (as an aside, I do and I have!)
I am ignorant in loads of areas, however none of those areas are of things which I have an interest.

Point made and seen.

You can all see how the harshness of the word is taken offensively.

If we are being factual. All humans are ignorant.

exactly, and people should stop getting offended by a word that describes perfectly what they are

But Joe.

If I met you and I raised my voice and said you know what mate. You're a homosapien!!!

Would you get offended at the context or the manor in which it was delivered?

If someone has been offended it's not up to them not to be because they were and their whole mental pathways have decided to be offended.

It falls upon the instigator to put it right and if it was a message that had been misunderstood, to reiterate.

no i wouldn't be offended if you called me a homosapien. That's mental. Who would get offended about that?

I'd just think you were a weirdo and walk away

Due to the nature of internet forums being written word only, they need to be approached with the frame of mind to deal with it.
Life is too short to worry about how things will be taken on an internet forum.

No...not necessarily....
Ignorance comes from choosing NOT to look up new things....
There is nothing wrong with NOT knowing something... it's choosing whether you want to know, or not, that decides whether you are now ignorant of a given word/subject etc...

So in fairness the 10% may not be ignorant. They have just not heard of Ansel Adams...

I'm not offended at all.

I just think it's a bit of a harsh word and as stated in the above post by solo man... probably the wrong word.

Yes.....

However, of those 10%, who having now heard of Ansel Adams, yet, still chose NOT to at least look him up....they could now be classed as ignorant...
Ignorance, and being ignorant, and staying ignorant are all different things to different people, according to 'their' grand scheme of things....
I am now no longer ignorant when it comes to knowing who Ansel Adams is....
