when you grow up???

:D

Im currently doing a BA in business mangement, and also doing a diploma over the holidays in stable management....i want to be a physio (equine/canine)... but i dont have A levels - hence paying stupid amounts to do my diploma now and having a degree.,, then doing physio (vet) as a masters.

So -what do you do now.....? is anyone in a dream job? know what you want to do?

discuss

HGV driver.... Dad was one when I was a nipper & because he drove the largest thing on the roads - I wanted to do the same... (plus he took us out in it )

I've always wanted to do nursing but everywhere I've lived has been miles away from any uni with nursing courses, I enrolled today on a 2yr part time access to nursing course (no placements on the 1yr full time course). When thats finished I'll be enrolling into a 3yr nursing course and when thats complete will be enrolling on an 18 month midwifrey course (it will be a 3yr midwifry course if theres no uni near too doing the 18 month course).

Hopefully it will all go smooth, with a 5yr old, a 10yr old, hubby, housework, job and dog it is going to be a long 6 and a half (god willing) years if not it will be an awfully long 8 years :)

no. and ive been in my current career path for 11 years.. lol

IT incidentally destroys the soul over the years. im hoping my photography takes off and earns me enough money to live on.

I,m NEVER gonna grow up!!

Loved my old job, not so keen on my latest one. Both pay about the same so thats not an issue. I used to be a self employed aircraft engineer (contractor) and I worked all over Europe depending where the work was. Worked hard and played harder. Lots of drinking and good times were had. Unfortunately it meant being away from home and family. Now back home in an office job, managing the people who do the job I used to do. But I'm home with the family every night.

Currently a Telecoms Engineer which is good, can be stressful but so can loads of other jobs.

Personally i like having a job is in an office as it makes me appreciate the time i get to spend outdoors doing my hobbies.

I had a chance a while back to get in to being a fitness coach, but i really like going to the gym as a hobby and did not want to blur the line between work and private life.

I feel the same about photography. I would not want to have the pressure of having to make a living out of it as going out with the camera is great 'time out'

If you get a job that you really like then well done. But i think that every job is what you and those around you make it. You only get out what you put in......

Well I'm doing engineering and design at OU, but no idea what I want to do. Basically, lots o money but with good holidays.

nicci good luck :) im sure you will do well. :)

great replies guys - keep em coming!!!

:)

I wanted to be a surgeon, but there were major changes to that plan. Ended up doing engineering, and then went into banking for most of my career. Eventually I gave up banking and move into automotive industry. Pay was the same, but the fun was 100x more :naughty:

Now, planning an early retirement; but who knows, may be a few more years in an office will do me good

Plans change, people move on; when I look back I wonder if I could have ever made it into medicine

My dream job is bein part of the idle rich. I plan to win the euro millions tomorrow :)
Or to be a motorsport driver of some kind (rally, F1, BTCC, BSB, IOM TT etc)

Actually though, i've always wanted to be in the RAF.
I left school,
went to college doing an IT course,
dropped out,
applied to the RAF
had RAF application cancelled due to government cuts back in february. at the same time was made redundant from my supermarket job
re-applied to the RAF yesterday.

You didn't happen to do any work experience or whatever you call it at the RVC (QMH hospital) did you?

I'm a vet student my self :) We had some physios here last week.

no - im in cheshire - i plan to go leahurst if they let me in next year :D

i assume you have been there too as part of your course?

when do you graduate?

I think I'm technically 'grown-up'...just don't tell any of my friends that!

My path is set for me now, I begin life as a trainee solicitor in September next year. Up until then, there'll be absolutely no growing-up done.

Growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional........ So i wont ...

From about age 14 when I started writing assembly laguage for my BBC Micro I knew I wanted to work with computers. Eight years of academic slog through the necessary O levels, A levels and engineering degree I started work doing just that. I'm 40 now and still don't want to do anything else. I haven't grown up though!

I put in many seconds three times every week to be a professional lottery winner :D ...

Is there a reason you're not just doing the 3 year midwifery course?

I'm a self employed midwife - doing my dream job! I've been a midwife for amost 14 years and can't imagine doing anything else. It is such a privileged position to be in, being part of someone's birthing experience and welcoming a new life into the world :)

I just want to broaden my horizans, I'd like to try my hand in a few areas of nursing, I've already donr the ou short course "living with diabetes" and will be doing a few more health science courses while doing my access course, think I will end up in midwifrey though.......have wanted to be a midwife/nurse since being a child.

Wanted to Fly Air sea rescue helicopters but only got GCSE's ( hey I'm an old fart ) so they wouldn't let me.

Wanted to join the Merchant Navy as a Radio and Radar operator, only got GCSE's so they wouldn't let me.

Joined a now defunct company called Ferranti and went into computers. That was back in the day when computers weighed 15 tons and filled a house.

Ended up years ago in retail computing fixing tills. Still like the job but too much pressure and whining people.

Now I want to be a Wildlife photographer but have neither the money or the skills.

So I'll just keep plodding fixing computers and dreaming of Africa LOL :D

Haha. Well, at the college, we've not done any yet. But we will towards the end of the course.

Away from college, at our extra mural studies placements (vets we choose) I have done cat spays, castrated dogs/cats/rabbits/ferrets and removed minor lumps etc :D

This. 100%

Even a fairly reasonable and well balanced individual can become a grumpy, cynical sarcastic git with a few years of IT under their belt.

ahh cool thanks :)

i wondered when youd did full ops etc? ... as the 4th/5 th year vets i spoke to didnt give off the impretion they saw much blood/ops

I wanted to be an architect, or a paleontologist when I was a kid!

I have ended up in the IT trap....various industries but now in financial services....jobs vary from spirit-crushingly vacuous to intense and fulfilling. Would like to work in a creative field but realistically can't walk away from the money at the moment....

Cat spays are pretty full ops? I've assisted in lots of dog spays too, basically done it but with someone else scrubbed up too.

You definitely rely a lot on your EMS placements.

what do you want to be ...
when you grow up???

oh blimey!
When I was really little, I wanted to be a vet (aged 5-7), then a librarian (aged 7-12), then a teacher (aged 12-19) (until I realised how hard it is being a teacher!). I ran away to uni and walked away with a BSc(Hons) because I didn't know what I wanted to do

I'm currently a developer working on our companies electronic trading product. Pretty much the happiest I've been with the company in the 11 years I've been with them, but it's a job not a career.
It allows me to be a weekend pretend tog and save so we can try for a little one.

But I still have no idea what I want to be!
