If so... you are apparently much more intelligent than the average buyer on ebay.... I have just had to explain what it meant to TWO of them and refund one guy. :bang::cuckoo::suspect::nono: I mean if you didnt know what it meant you'd look it up, right?

Yup.... as in every Argos catalogue up and down the country.. ..!
Faux Leather chairs, Faux Fur jackets ( for the Chav in your life) Faux Suede Shoes, Faux wood finish furniture... Jesus! I,ve seen it everywhere... Now I find that people dont generally know what it is????? what do they think? It is some kind of weird wonder animal that produces all this brilliant material you can use to make things...?? This seriously makes me weep! what happened to education in this country ? Bring back the teacher with a big stick and a heavy, deadly accurate board rubber!!!:bat::annoyed:

It's one of the utensils you use to eat your dinner, isn't it :D

Seriously though, if something is described as faux in the listing, then anyone buying it who complains "hey, this is imitation!" shouldn't have any comeback. It's as described, they've read the description, not your fault if they don't understand and proceed to buy anyway.

tell them it's made from faux cow....

I came to the conclusion a long time ago that a lot of the people who use Ebay are only able to do so due to the introduction of care in the community.....:shake:

 So, if it's fake or false? ... why not just say that! rather than a trying to deceive your buyers :| .... :shake: Not everyone speaks French or bull ****!

Because if you say "fake leather shoes", the same people who didn't know what faux meant will assume that it's the shoes that are fake, not the leather.....

Because dear Steve, its the first rule of sales.... If every sales person used the absolutey accurate description as he saw it... you'd never sell anything! I can see it now...
Car salesman: yes its a right load of old tat.. I wouldn't drive that if they paid me. Made in korea ya know... yes My dad shot lots of em... 7 years warranty don't make me laugh... it will kill you long before then.:exit:

Besides If its good enough for Argos ( who use it 58 times... I just checked) and thats the chavs "book of dreams" Who am I to argue?

Perhaps:thinking: But, It's still deception  .... Ebay is for everyone and any seller who tries to deceive should be jumped on! also ... Caveat emptor...

GREAT! the guy criticising the use of "FAUX" is now using Latin for "LET THE BUYER BEWARE" which is the whole point !!!

In what way is it deception? The word "faux" is in common usage, it's hardly "deception" to use a word just because someone else doesn't know what it means!

Out of interest,do you reckon any of those who struggle with "faux" will be able to translate "caveat emptor"?

I used "caveat emptor" as another example :) words such as "faux" were 'originally' used to deceive the buyer and (this is not aimed at the OP) still are!

Actually, you're illustrating nicely how everything in this country has become dumbed-down ;)

I thought Faux was a brand name, everything I by my wife is Faux :D

Are you having a laugh? If the seller described it as real leather then it is deception but calling it faux leather is a very accurate description as that's exactly what it is. If some buyers are too stupid to know what it means then that is their fault not the sellers.

I've just looked up the word 'faux' in the Oxford dictionary and it wasn't there but the term 'faux pas' was, as were several other French words that have been accepted in to the English language.

If you don't understand a word then either don't use it, look it up in a dictionary or ask someone intelligent what it means. Don't assume someone is trying to decieve you with the use of the word.

I thought a Faux was something you hunted with Hownds ?

;)

You could call it ARTIFICIAL leather rather than fake. Sounds beter and I'm sure it's much kinder to all those poor lil faux that get killed for their son n fur! Bet it isn't even done humanely.

Hmmm, faux hunting is of course banned in this country, so it would be a faux faux if from the uk. If foreign, your faux may well be a chat anyway

Isn't faux faux a name for a poodle? Could try hunting them I spose?

Is it "burgundy faux leather", by any chance? :D

I agree with the others. If you don't understand a word, look the faux king thing up.

So to buy on ebay you have to be as literate as the seller thinks you ought to be. Having the money the seller wants isn't good enough?

No, but it helps to at least be bright enough to look up the meaning of a word in a description means if you don't know. If you aren't, someone should be enough of a friend to cut your internet connection :p

So is a Faux pas
Not your real dad(s) then

At least Bobs ya' uncle and fannies ya' aunt

(surprised I got away with that TBH  :D)

The intention of putting the word Faux (foe) in descriptions, is to mean 'Imitation' or 'copy' or 'resemble' Its not a fake, or false, because it isn't intended to cheat anyone. It has been used in the antique business for a very, very long time.

well, generally you would have to be literate to buy from ebay. It's not an obscure term.

Think in the case of Photography and Art Faux means false, as in realism or Idealism portrayed in an image  ideal realistic

Sounds as though the OP made a Faux Pas
Posting it in the first place  :coat:

It's only not obscure if you know the term.

OK. It's a commonly used term. it's like saying 'so you have to super literate to shop in argos'.
If something is in very common use, then to me it is not obscure

I have to say, no, I've decided to say that Iknow the term but it doesn't trip off my tongue every day and I fairly sure, if a bit patronisingly, that quite a few of the people I know aren't aware of the term. All I'm saying is don't assume that everbody, including people you might want to sell to know all the same words you do. Just deal with them in a friendly way as people who's vocabulary is a bit different to you own preferred set of words. And yes I'm having yet another glass of wine. not common beer stuff :-) :coat:
