Do you know the difference between a ship and a small child?

It's a sad thing though isn't it, having to be prepared to defend yourself whilst walking along. Even though i'm still young, when I was 13-15 I wasn't the perfect child, I did mis-behave as i'm sure all of us have done, it's part of being a kid.

Even though it was only 5-6 years ago, mis-behaving was throwing a snowball at someones house window, or knocking on someone's door and running off. Now, they're throwing bricks at cars passing by, setting fire to things, beating people up as they innocently walk home, it's a joke. It's life, and it's probably only going to get worse, but it's a joke.

I know that this has happened to a mate of mine who was 18 or so at the time. He was photographing flowers or bees.

You know, flowers & bees doing their thang is a sexual activity . . .

Can I ask how old you are fella?

This is one of those type of things that's annoying, and out of order, but yet happens. Little Barstewards.

It's one of the reasons i'm confident to get my camera out in a public place, because due to the fact i'm only 19, I still look young, so chances are that nobody will randomly say anything to me.

I'm not saying that because i'm only 19, i'm immune (spelling) to random abuse by scumbags, or chavs etc, but by being younger, people tend not to bother.

If there was 2 people, 2 exact locations and 2 exact times of day, only difference being 1 was aged 20, and one was aged 40, you could put money on the fact that if anything was going to be said, it'd be to the older person.

It's a sad, sad thing, but it happens.

But then again, it can work the opposite way round. So I guess it's swings and roundabouts.

Fair play to you fella, i'd have probably left aswell if they were threatening me. Not because i'm a coward, as i'm sure you're not, but for the fact of being on my own & being smart enough to leave before it got worse. Last thing you want is to be set-about-on by a load of little arsewipes with nobody in sight & are on your own.

Heh, I think you're lucky I've had plenty of bother, (18, 6'4", short cropped hair and big DM steelies) but never with "P****" or "terrorist" involved, more "**** off or i'll bang you" type. I think that we young people who are togging get much more abuse (camera makes you different), just that it's less hurtful or menacing (well for me at least).

Had it been an annoying incident, I don't think I'd have bothered posting.

You may or may not be correct. Its a hypothetical debate that would probably end up going round and round in circles getting nowhere. The only thing that can be said with some confidence (and someone else started a thread to this effect shortly after reading mine) is that its probably different for men and for women.

Quite.

Being called a P**** by some disaffected yoof is bad enough, but the tabloid culture in the country has reached lower than that - I was at a wedding last year, one of the little flowergirls was playing up to the camera all day, wouldn't leave me alone. Later in the evening she was sitting with her mum and I stopped to take a shot of them both as I walked past. The little girl who couldn't have been older than 6 or 7 said 'Are you a paedophile ?' Nice. I was dumbstruck, as was her mum and everyone else sitting around.

What the hell is wrong with our society that a 7 year old even knows such terms ? As Chris Morris might say, it's noncesence.

I'm in the Matchworks area most of the week and I never knew anything like that wreck was there!

Yeah, carrying lots of expensive gear around Liverpool alone isn't one of my favourite activities. Still, my new Manfrotto 190XPROB has got a decent reach and weight behind it...

PDF file - love it! :D

[edit] I'd just like to add that I'm fortunate in that my missus likes to come out on shoots with me and even assists. Shoots then double up as social days out too. I wonder if male togs would get the same hassle if they were accompanied by a female?

You should go and have a look - its only 2 minutes drive down the road. You'll find a car park for the Speke Garston Coastal Reserve. As I said above, its a really great place (usually) where even just a 10 minute walk will do wonders to clear your head. And because of the way the Mersey behaves with low / high tide, its always a different experience.

Now, I think I need to go shopping. :D

On a general note, thanks for all your comments people (both here and on IRC). And support. It really is appreciated.

And I will send out some PMs, maybe in a couple of weeks time, to see if we can organise a meet down there.

Just get some external steel toe shoes, and weld studs on :D

(Well it worked for a biker I knew, everyone looked at those and thought twice about trying it on.)

I had a similar thing happen to me photographing Antony Gormley's Another Place on Crosby beach. I too though about 'introducing' the chap to my monopod but that would have been assault on my part so I chose to ignore the moron. The abuse was very disturbing though.

And you can guarantee you would have been prosecuted as well!

How old were they, and how many ?

I like the photo, hope you do get a chance to take a few more, and get on board as well. :)

Maybe they were just using "Paedophile" as a general term of abuse? They will have heard it before and know its a very bad thing to call someone?

MV - very disturbing ... i too am 44 and have not had to experience this type of incident firsthand ..... I hope i don't. Photography is my way of being creative/artisitic after a hard days work in an boring IT role. I must admit that I have joined a local camera club so I can go on outings with like minded people which helps with the confidence issue.

Nice shot in the circumstances.....

Maybe he actually said "PDF file" - you should have said, "Nah son, JPEG" :p

LOL...

:lol::lol::lol:

Cracker!

Tis very sad though...

You can`t go and take a few pics nowadays without some single brain celled, bone from the neck up, waste of space butting his no doubt ugly nose in on things...

AND NOT A CHILD IN SIGHT!!!

We do indeed live in a sad world...

i've been keeping up with the comments on this thread since it started and I have found it a little uncomfortable.
Russell has a thread going to take 5 pictures within a 200yd radius of where you live, and, to be quite frank, I don't like doing it. :shake: I have been out with my camera round the block twice now and each time I felt like a crime statistic waiting to happen. I have lived in my 2 up 2 down for 23 years, in a now running down area ( i am not run down though ), its been deteriorating for the last 10 years. I don't think its just toggers, I think its anyone who the local scum think is easy meat.
As a newcomer to photography I tend to quietly look and learn, keeping a watch at what you guys and girls are up too. One thing that has stood out so far is the threads of this nature, regarding toggers being p***'s etc. It is not making me very confident about going out and poking my camera in peoples faces in the street. Something I would love to do :(

I think these incidents are very few and far between and I'd hate to think that these discussions would put you off going out with your camera. I do know what you mean though, I feel very self conscious when I'm out with my camera, especially if I'm on my own.

I blame the media! :bang:

It'd pronounced 'peedo'. Innit.
