Do you ever shoot tethered? (Particularly Canon EOS)

I've shot tethered with the Canon software and DSLR pro which was the buggiest pile of garbage ever and continually crashed. Its ONE advantage was that you could focus electronically from the PC. Of course, this is a feature thats next to useless as after you focus the programme crashes. Wonderful techonology. Hopefully thats been ironed out by now!!

As Mole says, the remote Capture software is great for macro work - i will be exploring LR's offering though :)

/must read that book i bought!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really? It has never crashed on me, but then I don't have a camera with live view so maybe that was it.

In the studio most people use Capture one. It allows them to apply colour adjustments and cropping in real time, and you really get an idea of what you going to get right there, which is a real time saver.

erm - sorry to burst the LR bubble here, but you can NOT use it to shoot tethered, you use it to auto-import from the folder your tethered shoot is saving to. Kinda useless in that respect, no?

Yeah that is the way LR works. It is kind of stupid, but it was not built for that, sorta the reason why some people are sticking to C1.

And thats a fairly good reason. But, i have to say, i was far from impressed with CaptureOne... the interface is clunky and the controls of even CR are now superior (not to mention LR which rules the roost imo)

However, if C1 is that versatile with tethered shooting it may have carved a new niche for itself in the market.

The supplied lead should do it but I bought a much longer one and that works really well. I had the Canon software for the 20D on my lappy and had to reload with the disc for the 5D to shoot with that (different drivers)

Was going to reply to Marcel on this one "Yes and I've connected the camera to the lappy too" Gets a bit windy up here on the hill!

I shoot tethered when I do pack shots, works great with the Canon s/w and the 40D. Live view is ideal for fine tuning the position of the product, etc. but it does chew through the batteries pretty fast.

I always shot remotely (camera 60' away from laptop) and use DLSR Pro. It is a great bit of software (and we've never had any issues with it crashing).

You can use it for free for the first month as a trial to see if it suits you

I was using a 400D but now using a 40D with live view.

Make sure that the eoc capture software is intalled, you need the eos utillity. Plug in your camera turn it on, and the windows quick start box should come up select the eos utillity option and the remote screen should come up. From then just mess about and you'll learn quickly.

I did this with my 40D sitting on the bed. I moved the camera every other thing, shutter speed, WB etc done fron the laptop.

we,ll be using a 5D and a laptop or the pc. were thinking about print and sell at shoot too. maybe even viewing on a big screen, so thethered would prob be better than downloads from cf,s.
some more reading to do, i think.
mark.

If you really want to do this, from just a practicality point of view I would be shooting wireless. It also makes sense to use C1 Pro if you are going to do this, as you can apply the white balance and colour adjustments, and crop as you shoot, so it cam be ready for print faster. Also you can create a new shoot (folder) for each customer as you shoot so that it is easier to find their shots later. All this means you should have a digital tech with you, or if you set everything on a tripod, you can do it with just one person I suppose.

Also all of you saying you need to install the EOS software. Just remember that this only applies to PC (I only use XP so I don't know about Vista), as Leopard people get plug and play on their Macs.

I shoot teatherd and wireless in the studio, with the H1 And 1dsmk3, usually straight into C1pro with the H1 and into a hot folder for lightroom, wireless with the 1dsmk3 and 5d.
