Do you eat halal meat?

I'm fairly confident that both Kosher and Halal food rules specifically prohibit storing a mouldy pizza alongside other food in the fridge!

Student law (or should that be lore) on the other hand suggests that if you scrape off the mould and bang it in the over at 180 for twenty minutes it will be fine - so long as there is enough alcohol in your system to act as a disinfectant.

I thought that was all cookery

Like I said earlier, there are people so narrow minded up that if someone disagrees they are automatically wrong, or that if they say there is too much immigration then they are a racist or bnp member. I can't help it if people are preoccupied with that.
Anti-immigration. Anti-EU. I'd say your politics can be summed up by "All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state."

with the number of people who've told you you're wide of the mark on a couple of things, do you think you just might be?

may be its a case of 'anyone who disagrees with me is wrong' [/gortch]

I am familiar with it. It is used as I described.

You're either refusing to see the sheer "wrongness" of the way you phrased your initial post on the subject, or your grasp of the language is tenuous at best.

Either way, I won't be losing any sleep :-) (y)

The range of opinions on the thread are rather narrower than I am used to.
I suspect few on here spend much time on religious and political forums, and are not used to the shorthand.
Which is fine by me.
By now I would have expected a wide range of religious/political opinions, only some of which would have coincided with mine.
However it is pointless to have an opinion and then discard it with out reasoned argument.

On the question of Godwin's law, Its definition is an observation and has no function. its proposed usage on non political threads is different again and almost never actually used, as few accept the convention..

I said "Godwins law is an on-line observational tool to stop subjects like Jewishness and the holocaust being discussed inappropriately."

It is only ever used as an on-line tool, it is never used in any other way.
as Hitler and Nazism are inextricably linked to the holocaust and Judaism It is most often used to stop threads short when that subject matter appears inappropriately.
In reality it is rarely used at all.

Dummy...pram...spit. :)

And incidentally, the definition is humourous. It came into being, purely online, as humourous.

Well since I raised it, let me be absolutely clear. I thought I was getting a prize. I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition......

You can have prize if it makes you happy Jonathan. Not for invoking Godwin's law though. Just for being extra special

And so you should It was certainly prize worthy to remember such an obscure American idea.
It is like calling snap when no one else knew they were playing that game.

You're ALWAYS playing this particular game. That's how the internet works.

No, Godwin's Law states that if you've stooped as low as to start contrasting your topic of debate with Nazism and the Holocaust, then you've already lost. There is no right to draw that comparison.

No, it doesn't.

Godwin's Law simply states that as any internet debate goes on, the probability of a comparison involving Hitler or the Nazis approaches 1.

that is my understanding of it too, the longer an online debate goes on, the greater the chance of someone comparing it to Hitler or the Nazis....

However, what I am most amused by is the fact there is now a debate in here about an internet 'law' about debating/arguing.... oh the ironing.

Perhaps not a statement of fact and more of a widely accepted term - rings true nonetheless.

"...there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever debate was in progress"

Internet rules and laws: the top 10, from Godwin to Poe". The Daily Telegraph(London), October 23, 2009
And?

Godwin's Law makes exactly zero comment or statement about anything other than the probability of someone mentioning Hitler or the Nazis.

Some bloke in the Telegraph just saying stuff doesn't change the fact that what you said is emphatically NOT "Godwin's Law", because this is Godwin's Law (taken from the Wikipedia page you lifted your Telegraph reference from):

Godwin's Law said:
As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1

That's it. Nothing more. Nothing about whether the debate is won or lost. You can talk about Chivers' Corollary (I just invented that >proud<), if you like.

Nobody expects...
Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise, Godwins, Cobra, .... I'll come in again.

WIKI Says

Godwin's law (or Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is an Internet adage asserting that "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches — that is, if an online discussion (regardless of topic or scope) goes on long enough, sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Hitler or Nazism.

Promulgated by American attorney and author Mike Godwin in 1990 Godwin's Law originally referred, specifically, to Usenetnewsgroup discussions. It is now applied to any threaded online discussion, such as Internet forums, chat rooms and blog comment threads, as well as to speeches, articles and other rhetoric.

In 2012, "Godwin's Law" became an entry in the third edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.

My apologies oh great intrepid Internet Expert.

Whose definition I would take over Wiki-whatever, every day of the week.

Yes, even the most mundane tasks are better than this drivel.........:exit:

:coat:

Someone mentioning Hitler/Nazis doesn't satisfy Godwin's Law which according to the definitions previously given refers to " sooner or later someone will compare someone or something to Hitler or Nazism". Someone in this thread said that Nazi's thought that having Jewish blood made you a Jew, that's describing what the Nazi's thought, it wasn't comparing someone or something to Hitler or Nazism.
Ipso facto this thread is well and truly derailed!

That'll be the Nürburg ring then :D

Did you mean 43. Sure you don't mean 42 as in the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything
"Six by nine. Forty two."
"That's it. That's all there is."
"I always thought something was fundamentally wrong with the universe"

:D
