Do you cycle? PUT LIGHTS ON YOUR BIKE!!!

i cycle to and from work and out into the peaks etc. I have tram tracks to deal with and where the tram paltforms meet the road there is enough space for me to get the bike between the tram line and platform. this means there is enough space for a car to get round me if they need to. but when the wind picks up i tend to go in between the tram tracks so i have a change to recover if a gust gets me.

I havent needed lights over summer but always have relflective strips on the bag i cycle with. I will be have a light under the seat and on bag/helmet. and probably some waterproofs with strips.

my gripes are:

-motorists too close when over taking.
-motorists getting funny when i move to the middle of the road to turn right (yes i do signal)
-people on cycle paths!
-when cycling in the peaks and there are countless signs for dogs to be on leashes and the amount of times i have brake hard as a dog leaps out of nowhere.
- people stepping into the road even when the know i am there!
- motorists that dont signal!

If I could add... a dual carriageway was coned off to one lane, not enough room for a car to overtake, all there was was 20 cones, about 5 seconds was all it took for me to ride past them, when about 5 cones away from clearing them, the car decided to overtake and left about 7 inches space :annoyed:

Another is when there's traffic lights on red, cars waiting for them to change, and on approaching them, motorists overtake me leaving inches gap, going past then 20 metres up the road, stop behind the waiting vehicles at the traffic lights..

Where is the common sense these days? When I speak to some of the drivers about it, apparently it is me that's wrong for pointing it out, I am in the wrong for cycling 12 inches away from the kerb.

I just f*****g wish people's heads were banged together, smell the coffee and get back to reality ffs.

I'll be getting the helmet cam very soon. Police do not really have the resources (so I'm told) however, I am damned if I'm just going to put up with it. Footage will be sent to my MP, along with drivers responses when I approach them, reasonably and calmly....

And yes, some cyclists are just as bad as these motorists!

MODS: feel free to ban me, this is the way I feel and I feel better just by posting this, but understand if this goes past the line:rules:

well i was riding on snakes pass which goes over the penines this weekend. There are loads of cyclists on this road which is fine. Its not the widest of roads and some parts are nation speed limit.

now i aplaud the motorists and motorcyclist that actually changed lanes to over take. Some cars and most bikes have loud exhausts and when you are cycling into the wind you cant hear them. Its stops them spooking you!

one gi still have is when motorists over take before they want to turn left and then stop dead to let me pass on the inside. why! if you are going to be inpatient dont stop half way through the manuver, i am quite aware what you are doing and have slowed down for that reason. At which point when they look in their wing mirror they they will see my friendly gesture!

Almost all cyclists have insurance, they just don't know it.

Anyone with a contents insurance policy should have a personal liability section under this policy, which covers you for all acts of negligence for which an occupiers of the insured house are held liable. This includes cycling (but excludes motor and marine liabilities). So if you are involved with an accident with a cyclist which is their fault, then they have insurance to pay for the damages.

and those that dont insure their bikes? (personally i do but i know people who dont)
its not a legal requirment that insurance is needed for a cycle.
Yes i agree that civil action can be taken against a cyclist insured or not.

I still beleive that a cyclist should have mandatory insurance such as any road going vehicle. It doesnt have to be much and it could include liability as well.

Nor is it a requirement to have contents insurance...I just think it's unfair that motorists should suffer from damage to their vehicle due to the erroneous actions of a cyclist.

Motorists do moan about cyclists, but they forget that they are in a car (1 tonne) and if they collide with a cyclist (8 kg), then the cyclist is either seriously injured or killed, very rarely the other way round.

So if a cyclist wants to cycle without any lights or just pull out, then it is them that will lose their life at the end of the day..of course, they should be educated about lights etc. but lets face it, not many people these days think they're wrong and likes to be told what to do, so if they do lose their life even though they have been advised then what can you do.

But if the boot is on the other foot and I'm cycling with lights on, signalling etc. etc. then is it fair I should lose my life as a result of a motorist flouting the law by not waiting for 5 seconds?

I think EVERYONE should have it, to conform to today's society.

Don't forget pedestrians think roads are pedestrian paths and will often walk out into the road when I'm on my bike, causing me to swerve, possibly into the path of a vehicle on my right hand side..so if they hit me, I end up being injured and my bicycle is damaged, obviously I'll look to sue the pedestrian (if I have done all I can to avoid the collision). What if they don't have any assets etc.? The cyclist wouldn't get anything, a bit like if a cyclist damaged a motorist's vehicle..

Obviously, this applies to all cyclists and road users, but it is alarming how many people get carried away on their mobile phone whilst still walking etc.

i agree about pedestrians, not caring when they step out into a road! I had one this morning, shouted at him as i almost when over the handlebars!

I'm glad the people that design roads are slowly doing away with the drains at the edge of the road and using drains in the actual kerb! It means you dont get streams of water down the edge of the road and you dont have to ride away from the edge to avoid them. Manholes are generally not a problem.
