I would like this to be a clean, mature discussion, with stories of past experiences of the paranormal.
I personally do not.
I'm not sure whether it's because A) I'm an extremely logical person and the prospect of the supernatural is preposterous in my opinion, or because B) the idea of something that is completely out of my control scares me.
Some stories my mum has told me.
-The usual "I went to a psychic and she told me the names of my grandparents and sons without even knowing anything about me" - this to me is balony, especially after seeing several Derren Brown feats.
-My mum used to live in a mobile home with her best friend, and during a month, a bunch of their stuff went missing. Stuff that couldn't have been lost. Things like photo frames, clocks, jewellery that didn't leave a box, etc. They hunted and hunted for it. They went out one night, shut all the doors and windows. As they went outside, all the windows were open. Despite the fact they had literally just shut them. Both my mum and her friend experienced this. They eventually donned crosses and told what they thought might be a spirit to leave. All their stuff was returned and that was the end of it.
I believe this tale has changed with time. The memory of it was heightened, exaggerated and twisted, as are all experiences of things in the past.
-When my mum was in australia recently, they were in melbourne and in this quaint part of it with lots of atmosphere and darkened alleys and independant shops. In one alley, my mum saw a girl. What she described as a pretty serious goth with piercing eyes. As the girl looked up and caught my mum's eye, my mum felt this absolutely god awful feeling. The most scared she has ever been in her life (my brother died when he was born (he's okay now though
), and she said this experience was more scary than that). She had to get out of there.
I believe this was simply a case of someone freaking my mum out. Nothing supernatural, just a goth that my mum thought was something more.
-In our old house, during the night, when my mum went to the toilet, she saw a figure at the bottom of the stairs. Clear as day, of a man in a long cloak with a hat on. He would stand there watching. She saw this several times.
I believe this was just a coincidence. A trick of the light, and once she'd seen it once, it was instilled in her mind that it was there, and so her imagination desperately tried to see it also.
Now here's the deal breaker. When I was little, one night I came into my mum's room and said "Mummy, who is that man with the hat downstairs?"
This sent shivers up her spine yet she just told me "Don't worry sweety, it's just a dream, go back to bed."
However, I believe that I overheard my mum talking about it to my dad, causing me to see something too. Perhaps the same thing.
Now, I don't believe in ghosts, goblins, witches, vampires, anything like that.
My mum, on the other hand, does.
I would like your views. I'm very interested in this sort of thing.
I think this is a discussion that will never have a defining answer. It is just interesting to see people's views on the topic.
I don't want people coming in saying "Ghosts don't exist. End of."
Back it up with research, experiences, descriptions, explanations.
