hi i am wondering does the 400d 1000d and 40d all have exactly the same sensor?

thanks,

From the Canon site
More can be found HERE

DIGIC III processor

40D

10.1 Megapixels
6.5 fps continuous shooting, max. burst 75 JPEGs
New AF system with 9 cross-type sensors
DIGIC III processor
3.0” LCD with Live View mode

400D

10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor

The sensor is the same in all three bodies but the 40D's sensor has different micro-lenses.

Thanks Canon Bob, and thanks for the massive effort cobra although it didn't really answer my question. Canon Bob can you give me anymore information about what is different about the microlenses of the 40d and i guess how they improve quailty? also am i right in saying that the micro lenses are the tiny lens in front of each pixel that focuses the light into the pixel and not into the wall on either side?

thanks,

Yes, the micro lenses focus the gathered light onto the photo sensor. I understand that the micro lenses on the 40D cover a larger area and hence gather more of the available light. Ultimately this results in improved noise reduction at higher ISO values. The limitation in micro lens size is the pixel-pixel spacing so that a more dense array becomes a challenge in micro lens design....probably the main reason why the 5D's noise capabilities are so good for the era in which it was born.
