Do people today lack a sense of humour?

Yes
Not the funniest thing I ever heard, but nothing to get all wound up about. I find mostly when people claim offence they are claiming on behalf of others*.

* And as such deserve to .................................................. (Self censored to avoid causing offence.)

If only there was a story in the news about a gay person who despite being talented and caring lived a life of torment due to ignorant homophobes.

I've got a great sense of humour, I'll happily meet up for a beer and take the p*** with anyone, and it's possible to do so without returning to 1970's sexism, racism and homophobia.

The funniest things tend to be a bit on the cruel side, human nature is like that.

Doesn't mean that it reflects your nature or behaviour, but how many comedians make a living from clean family fun?

Must be a joke about a 99 in there somewhere

Just seen the comment on this by Peter Tatchell.

"It's a perverse world when everyday pleasures like ice cream becomes the butt of homophobic innuendo,"

It's not even a comedy line.
Nor is he a comedian.
Nor a decent writer.
A bit sad that it's garnered the reaction it has, but I honestly don't know what else expected, given the current trend for mockrage.

Discussing this in a serious way? eek you are all a bunch of Screwball's I mean I get it you are all Mivvi-ed off with his comments and want to kick 48 flavours out of him, but he is Mini and just Milk-ing it to get a rise out of you all, and like a Rocket, off you all go bunch of flakes if you ask me all 99 of you....

I reckon Glorafin (?spelling?) has it right in the comments.

no-one would have batted an eye lid if it wasn't the top quee ... I mean gear crew.
not even a funny line

IMO there are jokes that are "safe" and there are those that aren't. The latter will always offend someone because the topic involved blondes, irish, women, men etc. Sometimes a joke will unintentionally offend someone.

Last year's best joke at the Edinburgh fringe:

"I did a gig in a fertility clinic. I got a standing ovulation.”

You can bet someone would have been offended at it.

Yet again we see another bout of 'we cant make fun of anyone'. http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/artic...-ice-cream-joke-on-amazon-show-the-grand-tour

It seems that you cant make fun of anyone without offending. How sad some of these people are... do they just laugh at Knock knock jokes?

That's exactly the way of thinking that got Trump elected.

You can never guaranty not to offend anyone but intentionally offending large groups of people for cheap laughs is abhorrent.

Just to point out.

I'm not outraged or disgusted, just a little bit disappointed that a small number of people can't see that homophobic mockery is just a sign of stupidity.

Well that's just it. It was a stupid comment. It doesn't mean that Richard Hammond is a stupid person, I'm probably being over generous to him, and I really hope that he regrets saying it, he should certainly be embarrassed by it.
What I find really stupid is that it wasn't edited out, not because it could be perceived as being offensive but because it wasn't funny (Again assuming it was supposed to be.) and added nothing. Watching the clip again it looks as though he was trying to out-Clarkson Clarkson and failed miserably.
He'd dug himself a hole and kept digging. If he couldn't see that, and/or lacked the ability to reign himself in then the producers should have stepped in and stopped the recording or at least edited it out.

All that seems to be important in today's media is that you are able to attract attention to yourself (whilst staying within the law etc).

I think that's why Hammond's 'quip', like Clarkson's frequent 'gaffes' in the past are broadcast, they are 'controversial' and most importantly 'click bait' for D.Mail readers. Ignore them and they'll go away.

Storm in a cone, why are those so outraged never the group the slur is aimed at.

Some of them are.

But whitewashing this behaviour and diverting this to attack do-gooders really does help insensitive arseholes justify behaviour which is simply 'wrong'.

As above, it was a crap joke, insensitive and only left in the show to court controversy, we have to examine why this happens with a little intelligence rather than lazily blaming political correctness for creating the 'outrage'.

Forget the 'group', ask your gay friends what they think ;)

You'll find a range of opinions.

I agree it was a crap joke, but in your book who or what is it safe to take the p*** out of?

How about Northerners,Southerners,Foreigners,Chavs,Tightwads or shall we just have some good old pie in face slapstick and Brain Rix farce

Everything has the potential to offend, but depends who finds it offensive

Should people only find homophobia offensive if they are gay? Should people only find racism offensive if they are of a race that is targeted? "Offended on behalf of others" is all too often used as an excused to dismiss these things as unimportant.

I am too insensitive for this discussion, have a good one and Happy New Year

I'm happy to take the p*** out of anyone, just not because they're gay, black, Jewish etc.

It's lazy and offensive to label such a massive section of society.

Offence is taken never given.

You can make a joke about a stereotypical man being lazy, but not a joke about a woman being stupid? Both are the same.

There is a brilliant female comedian who is African, her whole routine takes the p*** out of Africans and everyone laughs, let a white person do it and there would be outrage. Personally I think there is no difference. If some thing is racist then it's racist,n no matter who says it.

Asked my friend his views who is gay and his response was 'in that case, I'm off to enjoy a big fat 99 with chocolate sauce'. I don't think he was that bothered

I think people will be quick to take offence by anything that Clarkson, Hammond and May say due to who they are. If a gay celebrity had said it then no one would have batted an eyelid. In this country we're too PC about things. I'm a Welshman and quite often hear the sheep joke and it doesn't faze me.

You are obviously under the illusion that the majority of this programme is adlibbed as opposed to being scripted.

Thanks for your contribution but I'm not under any illusion.
The choice of words was made when the script was written. Where it would have been discussed and one of the team, in this case Hammond, was chosen to say it. Editing it is not necessary unless they had a change of heart.

They chose to do this. They knew it would appeal to a certain sort of person.
The trouble is, it will give fuel to the thicko homophobes.

If anyone thinks that sort of comment is OK, you should think about what some dimwits are going to think and do when they see this on mainstream TV.

"sense of humour"? It wasn't even funny.

But surely, extracting the Michael is wrong, full stop!

Or Gingers, baldies, too fat, too skinny, thicko's, folk with little or no sense of humour .......... the list is endless, but somewhere along the line, you can be sure someone will be offended.

Folk in general, just need to lighten-up a tad more & stop looking for the negative in everyone/everything.

If you're not happy with it, I'll happily leave you alone - there's plenty of people in the world who accept banter :D

I think folk generally are quite chilled. But homophobic f*****g idiots should be made to feel the way the victims of their 'jokes' do.
Not funny (not even nearly - so absolutely pointless)
Not big
Not clever

It's usually OK to make fun of people's choices. Like those who choose to bully, cheat, hurt or steal. Or choose a fashion style, religion or political group. It's quite nasty to make fun of people's situation that they didn't get to choose. Like hair colour, skin colour, disability, speech impediment or sexual orientation.

Clearly some can't work this out for themselves.

Agree with all of that.

As regards what Hammond said. If it was all scripted and none of it was ad-libbed, and if Hammond was chosen to say it, then I would have thought that he would have had enough clout within the team to turn round and say "That's b*****ks, I'm not saying that!"
The fact that he went ahead and said it makes him look a bit of a dick for sure, does it make him homophobic? I wouldn't have thought so.

Haha, not a problem at all with me, I've worked in the building trade ................... fire away. (y) ;)

I do think that `taking the p!55` & `banter` are slightly different, but either can be taken the wrong way, depending how thick-skinned you are. I also believe it's can be a bit of a generation thing.

I must be really out of touch as I'm not sure who this comment was either meant to(if that was the intention) or might offend.

I'm sure plenty of gay people eat ice cream so why would they be offended?

Are hetrosexual men who eat ice cream supposed to be offened because the comment suggests they are gay?

It is about as stupid a comment as some that used to circulate when I was a kid - things like men who like pink or wore white socks were gay (though that wasn't the word used then), but it was intended to provoke a response and that's exactly what it did .

"There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about .... "

It's new blaaaaa ... ooh, can't say that can I. True though, pops up on here all too often.

I had a 99 beside the Dart this afternoon. Never crossed my mind that I was on the turn. Still wouldn't f*** Clarkson with Hammond's!!!
