Just getting trying to get sorted with my kit, advice on what to do next would be great. I dont know wether to keep the 300d and sigma lens or sell them so i can afford a ball head or a macro lens thanks

I have a canon 300d with a sigma 70-300 dg lens, the other one i had died!

now upgraded to a canon 40d with a ef 70.20 f4 L. nifty fifty, 2x extender, 24-70 f2.8 lens. and a manfoto mono pod with no head!

Ive been looking at the forums for a few months now and im always drawn to the bird and the macro ones first! wondering what do i need to enable me to do more in these fields oh and i go to motocross quite often too

Personally I would sell the Sigma as I am sure you have noticed the quality difference between that and you 70-200 and with the extender you have the length covered. I would be tempted to keep the 300D as a second body unless you can get a good price for it.

The 100 2.8 macro does seem to get some rave reviews, but I haven't really done any macro so can't help there :(

I love my 100 macro, but don't they(canon) do a 180macro as well, dont know about the differences, some one must

Canon do the 100 USM 2.8 and the 180 L series about 2.5 x more expensive - difference well DoF, minimum focusing distance - I have 100 USM it is a good quality lens - hunts a little on auto focus but so does the sigma. It is a very good place to start. Check prices @ www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/index.html Hope this helps:coat:

Hi Thanks for all the replies I will look at both the macro lens, the sigma is defo going as the canon is so much better, you are right, i tried the sigma out and it is very difficult to focus, you dont realise until you have a better one to use:bang:

its not worth selling the 300d looked up second hand prices oh my they are so cheap now.

For macro also have a look at the sigma 105mm and the 150mm, both cracking lenses. For motocross the 70-200 and 24-70 are ideal.

For birds it's length you need. the 2X on the 70-200 might work although I think you'll lose the AF? What about a Canon 100-400, very versatile, cheaper than a long prime. Another option could be the sigma 50-500mm, depends how much you want to spend really.
