Yes
Hey, I have a D3100 coming my way soon with the 18-55 kit lens. I have decided that I will buy the 55-200VR when I have a little spare cash but I may also buy the 35mm f/1.8?

But when thinking about it I don't really think I need one - the only reason I was going to get one was due to people telling me that it is a great lens which is relatively cheap. I understand its good for low light - but I dont see me needing this type of lens. I'm more into landscapes I think..

But yeah, should I get this lens because its just one of those lenses which most people will make use for or is it a waste?

Thanks, Ben.

Well I was considering nipping out and grabbing one of these today. Why? I have the 50mm 1.8 and it's much better for the indoor shots without flash. the 50mm however is a little too close for the size of my living room and if I want pics of the kids on xmas morning then it's either flash and all the lights on or stand out in the garden!

I love mine, and am prefering it to my zoom. The 50 mm equivalent is fine for mist situations I find. Starting to realize why they used to use these as the kit lens back in the film days! :)

That's the exact reason I bought one last week, and I find it a fantastic little lens! I can't see me using much of my 50/1.4 any more, in fact I'm already tempted to sell it on to fund some strobist type stuff.

The 50/1.4 on my D300 always felt a little too long, but the 50mm equivalent is just about perfect, and I now understand why all traditional SLR's used to be kitted out with a 50, it just feels right.

Cheers

Aled

You need em all! :) 50mm on a crop sensor makes a nice little portrait lens too.

Are they only used for portraits or do they have other uses as well?

They can be used for loads of pictures - like this one -

don't buy lenses because you 'think' you should have it.

Buy lenses you decide you need. It's a mistake I've made before.

Only when you're shooting and you think, 'you know what, 'x' lens would come in really handy right now' should you start to consider it.

Nice advise cheers, will have a play with the 18-55 and go from there. :)

also nice pics awp :)

put your kit lens at 35mm and selotape it up. If you find you can get on with this focal range, then imagine adding the extra iq, shallower dof, low light ability for the money involved.

Every party or social event, or just playing around at home i put this lens on. Nice and compact (as compact as a d90 gets lol)

I bought this lens a few months back and am very happy with it. I had the 50mm 1.4. Sold it and bought a 50mm 1.8 and a 35mm 1.8. I'm finding the 50mm sits in the bag a lot more now! The 35mm on a crop sensor is equiv. to 50mm in old money 35mm SLR. This is the same lens my dad had on his SLR all the time before zooms were around.

I've been very happy with the 35mm lens as it is great for pictures of my children where the 50mm was just a bit too long. Also very sharp - much sharper than my 18-200.

Agree with suggestion of using your kit lens at 35mm to see how you get on.

MPB have one for sale for £134.00 although I think Jessops are still doing them new for @159.00.

There is something very liberating about shoving a simple lens on the front of your camera and making do - tests the creativity.
Get one, it's great!:)
